Shadowcopter adds realistic helicopter shadows to Project Zomboid Build 42. When a helicopter flies overhead, its shadow briefly sweeps across the ground during daylight. Customize shadow size, speed, variation and helicopter volume. The effect is purely visual and does not change zombie attraction or helicopter behavior. Supports multiplayer and existing saves.

Shadowcopter adds a small but atmospheric visual detail to Project Zomboid: the moving shadow of a helicopter flying overhead.

During the helicopter event, you may notice a large silhouette briefly sweeping across the ground. The effect makes the aircraft's presence more convincing without introducing new threats or changing how the event works.

The modification is purely cosmetic and follows the game's existing helicopter and sandbox settings.

How Helicopter Shadows Work

The shadow appears only when certain conditions are met:

  • A helicopter is flying overhead and within hearing distance.
  • Your character is outdoors.
  • The event takes place during daylight.
  • Weather conditions do not include a storm.

The aircraft's silhouette does not remain visible throughout the entire event.

Instead, you may see one or two brief passes, separated by a few seconds. Each lasts approximately 1.5 seconds.

This limited duration is intentional, creating the impression of an aircraft crossing the area rather than constantly hovering above the player.

Customize the Visual Effect

Several settings are available through:

Options > Mods > Shadowcopter

Setting Description
Helicopter Volume Reduces the sound heard by the player without affecting zombie attraction
Shadow Size Controls the scale of the silhouette
Shadow Speed Adjusts how quickly it moves
Shadow Variation Changes the amount of size and speed variation between passes

For size and speed, 100 represents the normal setting.

Lower size values produce a smaller silhouette, while higher speed values make it cross the ground faster.

The variation setting works differently:

  • 100: Size and speed vary between passes.
  • 0: Every pass uses the same values.

Does It Affect Zombie Behavior?

No.

Lowering the helicopter's audible volume does not make the event safer.

Zombies continue reacting according to the original game mechanics, even when the aircraft sounds quieter to the player.

The addon does not alter helicopter schedules, movement or spawning behavior.

Compatibility with Forevercopter

Shadowcopter follows the regular helicopter event settings.

For players using Forevercopter, which provides a more persistent helicopter experience, installing both is unnecessary.

If both addons are enabled, Shadowcopter automatically steps aside and Forevercopter's settings take priority.

Requirements and Save Compatibility

Feature Status
Game version Build 42 only
Additional dependencies None
Single-player Supported
Multiplayer Supported
Existing saves Safe to add or remove
Client-side operation Yes
Save data changes None

The effect runs entirely on the client and does not modify the game world or write additional information into save files.

Shadowcopter is a lightweight atmosphere enhancement for players who want the helicopter event to feel more present. A fleeting shadow across the street or an open field adds a visual reminder of the aircraft above, while the original survival mechanics remain intact.
