Detailed Vanilla Models - Part 7: Melee II & Instruments upgrades 63 existing items in Project Zomboid, focusing on blades, improvised weapons, sporting equipment and musical instruments.
The new 3D models feature more refined geometry and textures, making familiar objects easier to appreciate when held or carried by a survivor. Their appearance remains close to the original game, while damage, durability and other properties are unchanged.
Designed with first-person gameplay in mind, the improvements also work in the classic isometric perspective.
63 Redesigned Items
The collection is divided into six equipment groups.
| Category | Models |
|---|---|
| Knives and small blades | 20 |
| Crafted spears | 10 |
| Upgraded baseball bats | 12 |
| Sports equipment | 8 |
| Guitars and banjo | 8 |
| Other musical instruments | 5 |
| Total | 63 |
Knives and Small Blades
Twenty models cover everyday cutting tools, combat blades and improvised weapons.
Included examples:
- Bread, butter, steak, paring and fillet knives.
- Fighting knives and daggers.
- Butterfly and pocket knives.
- Machete knife.
- Multitool and letter opener.
- Scalpel and plastic knife.
- Railroad spike knife.
- Improvised shivs, including a toothbrush shiv.
The updated shapes preserve their recognizable silhouettes rather than turning them into entirely different weapons.
Crafted Spears
Ten spear variants receive detailed models representing their attached blades and tools.
These include spears made with:
- Kitchen knife.
- Hunting knife.
- Machete.
- Screwdriver.
- Bread knife.
- Butter knife.
- Letter opener.
- Scalpel.
- Fighting knife.
- Steak knife.
Each remains the same craftable item, with its existing combat characteristics.
Modified Baseball Bats
Twelve upgraded bat models feature different improvised attachments.
The designs cover nails, spikes, saw blades, circular saw components, railroad spikes, rake and garden fork heads, tin cans, scrap metal sheets, bolts and crafted bats.
These details make the construction of each variant more visible without introducing new upgrades or recipes.
Sports Equipment
Eight sporting items also receive improved geometry, including:
- Metal baseball bat.
- Pool cue.
- Drumstick.
- Hockey stick and ice hockey stick.
- Tennis racket.
- Badminton racket.
- Lacrosse stick.
The changes help distinguish their different shapes and materials when seen close to the camera.
Guitars and Musical Instruments
The collection also covers equipment intended for music rather than everyday survival work.
Eight guitar-family variants include acoustic, electric and bass guitars in their original color variations, alongside the banjo.
Five additional instruments are remodeled:
- Violin.
- Flute.
- Keytar.
- Trumpet.
- Saxophone.
The redesigns improve visual fidelity while keeping the existing item behavior intact.
Preserving the Original Look
Following feedback on earlier releases, the author rebuilt a substantial portion of the models and removed some unnecessary artistic embellishments.
The goal is to make objects more detailed without departing too far from their vanilla designs.
Some texture or geometry imperfections may remain.
Choose Which Models to Replace
Each equipment group has its own Use Vanilla Model setting.
Open:
Options > Mods
You can, for example, use redesigned spears and instruments while keeping the original knives.
Restart the game after changing these options to apply the selected models.
Compatibility and Technical Details
The addon retains the original hand positions and attachment points. Weapons continue to sit in the character's hands or on their back as before.
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Tested version | Build 42.21 |
| Project Viewpoint | Optional |
| Multiplayer | Supported |
| Existing saves | Safe to add or remove |
| Original combat statistics | Unchanged |
| Client-side operation | Yes |
| Vanilla files overwritten | No |
The replacement assets use their own names rather than modifying original game files.
No new weapons, crafting mechanics or musical interactions are introduced.
First-Person Support
The series was developed to complement Project Viewpoint, where held objects appear much closer to the camera.
Additional detail is especially useful for small knife components, spear attachments and instrument shapes.
However, Project Viewpoint is not required to enjoy the improved visuals.
Detailed Vanilla Models Collection
Melee II & Instruments is the seventh part of a larger series covering different categories of original equipment.
Other standalone releases enhance bags, lights, tools, food, medical supplies, electronics, kitchenware and firearms.
This installment is a practical visual upgrade for players who want improvised weapons and musical equipment to look more convincing without changing the game's combat balance or inventory mechanics.
