Detailed Vanilla Models - Part 9: Firearms improves the visual quality of all 26 standard firearms in Project Zomboid. Pistols, revolvers, rifles, carbines and shotguns receive more detailed 3D models while preserving their original appearance and gameplay characteristics.
The redesign focuses on smoother metal surfaces, properly rounded barrels and sharper textures. These improvements are particularly noticeable in first-person gameplay, where weapons appear close to the camera.
Damage, accuracy, durability and other firearm statistics remain unchanged.
All 26 Vanilla Firearms Redesigned
The collection covers every original firearm model across four categories.
| Weapon Category | Models |
|---|---|
| Pistols | 3 |
| Revolvers | 3 |
| Rifles and carbines | 13 |
| Shotguns | 7 |
| Total | 26 |
The rifle and carbine category also includes visual variants without magazines.
Shotguns receive appropriate versions for sawn-off and open configurations.
These are alternate model states rather than additional weapons.
Improved Geometry and Textures
The overhaul addresses several limitations of the original low-detail assets.
Visual improvements include:
- Smoother, rounded barrels.
- More accurate revolver cylinders.
- Refined magazine tubes.
- Beveled edges instead of sharp polygonal corners.
- Textures described as four times sharper than the originals.
- Subtle wear along metal edges.
The familiar weapon silhouettes remain intact, preventing the redesign from changing their recognizable identity.
Original Animations and Attachment Positions
Hand positions and attachment points are preserved.
This helps maintain alignment with the game's existing animations and equipped accessories, including:
- Optical sights.
- Weapon-mounted flashlights.
- Bayonets.
- Other standard attachments.
Accessories themselves are not remodeled. Their original 3D assets remain in use.
Choose Original or Updated Models
You can disable the visual overhaul separately for each weapon category.

The following groups have individual Use Vanilla Model settings:
- Pistols.
- Revolvers.
- Rifles.
- Shotguns.
For example, you can keep the original handgun designs while enabling improved rifles and shotguns.
Restart the game after changing these options.
Project Viewpoint Compatibility
The updated assets were developed with Project Viewpoint in mind.
In first person, weapon models occupy a larger portion of the screen, making geometric imperfections and blurry textures easier to notice.
Higher-quality surfaces improve their appearance during close-up viewing.
Project Viewpoint is optional. The changes are also visible in the classic isometric perspective.
Requirements and Mod Compatibility
| Feature | Status |

| Multiplayer | Supported |

| Original firearm statistics | Unchanged |

The replacement models use separate resource names, leaving vanilla game files intact.
Third-party weapon packs that introduce their own firearm models, such as Escape From Zomboid Firearms, are not affected.
No additional weapons, ammunition types or combat mechanics are included.
Detailed Vanilla Models Collection
Firearms is the ninth installment in the Detailed Vanilla Models series, which provides independent visual improvements for different categories of existing equipment.
Earlier releases cover melee weapons, tools, bags, lighting, food, medicine, electronics, kitchenware and smoking accessories.
This installment provides a more refined appearance for the game's existing guns while retaining their familiar handling, attachments and combat balance.
