Project Viewpoint: Recoil & ADS
Aim down your gun's real sights in Project Viewpoint. Raise the weapon to your eye and look through its actual sights. Iron sights, red dots, holographic sights and magnified scopes line up straight away, with no manual calibration for each gun.

Aiming
True sight alignment. The weapon comes up to Viewpoint's eye, so the rear sight, front sight and target fall into one line. Iron sights are calculated from each individual gun's 3D model.
DayZ-style aiming. Right-click to raise the sights, and they stay up; click again to lower them. Hold right mouse to fire from the hip. The options include other modes too: V-key toggle, hold-to-aim and aim-to-ADS.
Third person. Hip fire happens in third person; raising the sights switches you to first person, and lowering them switches back. This can be turned off.
Clean view. While the sights are up there's no crosshair, no depth-of-field blur from Viewpoint's shader pack, and no gun or body clipping into the camera.
Rests and bipods. Rest your gun on a table, wall or windowsill, or go prone: sway settles down and bipods deploy.
Hold your breath. Hold Shift to steady raised sights. With iron sights and red dots, the view also zooms in slightly.
Swap optics any time. Attach, remove or replace a scope and aiming adjusts instantly.
Upside-down pistols fixed. Vanilla pistols and revolvers whose models are built upside down in their files are now held the right way up.
Scopes
Picture-in-picture. The magnified image is drawn only inside the scope's glass, while the rest of the screen stays at normal zoom. Works with shader packs (BSL and others). Can be turned off.
See-through red dots and holo sights: clear glass with an illuminated reticle. Every Guns of Marz sight is supported.
2x to 12x magnification with authentic reticles: cross-dot, duplex, mil-dot, post, chevron and the Eastern-style reticle on PSO-type scopes. The "Scope zoom" setting boosts magnification: it defaults to 1.5x, so a 4x scope gives you 6x. Reticle colour and brightness are adjustable.
Variable zoom. On scopes of 4x and above, the mouse wheel steps through magnification:
| Scope | Steps |
|---|---|
| 8x | 2x / 4x / 8x |
| 6x | 1.5x / 3x / 6x |
| 4x | 2x / 4x |
Mouse sensitivity scales with magnification. You can also bind dedicated zoom keys.
DayZ-style zeroing. Page Up and Page Down change the zero range of the sight on your gun: - large scopes: up to 500 m; - red dots: 150 m; - rifle iron sights: 200 m; - pistols and shotguns keep a fixed zero.
Zeroing needs Viewpoint True Ballistics, since bullets only drop with it. Without it, zeroing is switched off.
Everything is remembered. Magnification and zero are saved for each gun and optic combination, and a small readout briefly shows the current values after every change.
Recoil and handling
DayZ-style recoil. Every shot kicks the view up and part of that climb stays, so on full auto you have to hold the gun down. You can see the weapon jump.
Hip-fire spread. Shots land in a cone whose size depends on the weapon class: it grows while you move and tightens as your Aiming skill improves.
Handling. Raise speed depends on weapon class: pistols are fastest, sniper rifles slowest. Breathing sway depends on Aiming skill, endurance, fatigue and panic. Turning has noticeable inertia.
Your gun takes up space
Your weapon is a physical object. Push it into a wall, door, window, tall shelf or car and it won't pass through; it moves out of the way instead: - a rifle collapses its stock and rises into a high ready; - a pistol pulls back to your chest and points down; - your elbows bend, but the gun never goes into your body.
Step back and the weapon returns to your sight line.
- Length matters. It's calculated from the gun's model and attachments: with a pistol you can get right up to a wall, while a long sniper rifle is clumsy indoors.
- Shoot over railings. Low fences, railings and half walls only push the gun back when it's below them, for example when you're crouched.
- Works with everything: first and third person, hip fire and ADS, every sight, recoil, leaning and True Ballistics. Shots go where you aim.
- For every player. Other players' guns collide with obstacles too, on your screen (nothing changes on the server).
- Optional low ready. Lower the muzzle slightly while holding a gun without aiming.
Settings
Open them through Viewpoint's settings window: Delete > Recoil & ADS.
Aiming: ADS mode, aiming priority over the V radial menu and interaction prompts, raise speed, ADS and scope sensitivity, third-person ADS, crosshair, blur and clipping fixes, iron sight distance.
Recoil and behaviour: sway, recoil and recoil strength, hip-fire spread, inertia.
Weapon collision: trigger distance, pose strength, smoothing, low ready.
Scopes: picture-in-picture and its quality (High / Mid / Low), eye box, lens size, Scope zoom, variable zoom, reticle colour and brightness.
Keys are in Options > Keybinds.
The calibration window (F9) lets you fine-tune any gun and optic by typing in exact values, including the picture-in-picture lens.
Requirements
- ZombieBuddy: follow its installation guide.
- Viewpoint
Load it after Viewpoint. On first launch and after every update, ZombieBuddy will ask you to approve this mod's Java file.
Compatibility
Weapons
Vanilla firearms, plus Vanilla Firearms Expansion [CLASSIC], the STALKER Pack, Post '93, GoM - Guns of Marz (all 67 guns and all its optics) and GaelGunStore: over 170 firearms in total.
Guns from other mods get a profile automatically, and mod authors can register their own through the Lua API.
Optional add-ons
- Viewpoint Advanced Movement: sights follow your Q/E lean and camera tilt.
- Viewpoint True Ballistics: real bullet flight. Aimed shots travel along your sight line, hip shots follow the spread cone, and recoil shifts your next shot.
Viewpoint 0.1.6
With the sights up, Viewpoint's crosshair sway fades out and its own camera recoil is replaced by this mod's, so there's no double recoil. If Viewpoint's "Gunplay Rework" is on, its aim ring handles hip-fire spread.
Multiplayer and servers
The mod runs on the client and doesn't change damage, ammo or hit detection.
If it's installed on the server as well, nearby players see your gun's up/down tilt while you're aiming, so a muzzle pointed at the ground looks that way to them too. Without the mod on the server, there's no sync.
Known issues
- Picture-in-picture renders the world inside the lens a second time. The "Picture-in-picture quality" setting (High / Mid / Low, default Mid) lets you trade detail for frame rate, or you can turn the feature off entirely.
- Project Zomboid's arm and hand models were made for an overhead camera, so up close the hands can look a bit rough on some guns.
