A-Life: Factions Expanded is a large survivor faction expansion for Project Zomboid, introducing 100 groups and 1,776 character presets to the NPC ecosystem of Project A-Life.

Formerly known as A-Life: Knox Fractured, the project has grown from a collection of 24 factions into a much broader population system. Kentucky's towns and countryside can now be populated by organized communities, emergency workers, traders, hostile gangs and recognizable survivors from other zombie apocalypse franchises.

Each group has its own background, regional spawning rules, relationships and character roster. Some may be friendly, while others are cautious, unpredictable or openly hostile.

100 Factions and 1,776 Survivor Presets

The expansion combines original communities inspired by Knox County with crossover characters from popular zombie fiction.

Category Factions Character Presets
Original Knox County factions 78 1,404
The Walking Dead 20 360
Zombieland Road Crew 1 4
Left 4 Dead Survivors 1 8
Total 100 1,776

The original category contains all 24 factions from Knox Fractured alongside 54 newly introduced groups.

Every original faction has 18 named character presets. The Walking Dead communities use the same number, combining recognizable personalities with original supporting survivors.

Across the crossover content, there are 176 named characters, each assigned to exactly one faction.

New Communities Across Knox County

The original groups are designed to fit the atmosphere of Kentucky during the zombie outbreak.

Instead of filling the world exclusively with armed survivors, the catalog introduces people from different professions and backgrounds.

You may encounter:

  • Waterworks crews and electrical line workers.
  • Nurses and medical personnel.
  • Mechanics and repair specialists.
  • Farmers and seed keepers.
  • Bus drivers and transport workers.
  • Librarians and diner employees.
  • River traders and quarry workers.
  • Organized relief teams.
  • Road gangs and predatory toll collectors.
  • Thieves targeting food supplies.
  • Fake emergency patrols.
  • Groups occupying abandoned farms.

These communities have different starting conditions, territories and relationships.

Some attempt to maintain ordinary life, while others exploit the collapse of public order.

Faction Behavior and Relationships

Groups can have friendly, neutral, cautious or hostile dispositions.

Their presence depends on several factors, including the age of the world, location, population settings and reputation.

NPC equipment uses existing game items, while ammunition supplies are finite.

This helps preserve the survival mechanics of Project A-Life instead of giving every faction unlimited combat resources.

The Walking Dead - 20 Factions

The expansion brings several communities and organizations from The Walking Dead into Knox County.

Included factions:

Atlanta Survivors Greene Farm
Prison Survivors Woodbury
The Claimers Terminus
Grady Memorial Alexandria Safe-Zone
Hilltop Colony The Kingdom
The Saviors Oceanside
The Scavengers The Wolves
The Whisperers The Reapers
The Commonwealth Civic Republic Military
The Vatos Magna's Group

This crossover follows an alternative timeline rather than reproducing the television series scene by scene.

Characters who belonged to multiple communities are assigned to a single group to avoid duplicate identities.

For example:

  • Rick and Daryl: Atlanta Survivors.
  • Maggie: Hilltop Colony.
  • Carol: The Kingdom.
  • Michonne: Alexandria Safe-Zone.
  • Jadis: The Scavengers.

The characters are represented through available Project Zomboid assets and A-Life's existing NPC behavior.

Zombieland and Left 4 Dead Survivors

Two additional crossover factions introduce familiar characters from other zombie universes.

Zombieland Road Crew

The group contains four recognizable survivors:

  • Tallahassee.
  • Columbus.
  • Wichita.
  • Little Rock.

All four belong to a single faction.

Left 4 Dead Survivors

The Left 4 Dead group combines characters from both games:

  • Bill.
  • Zoey.
  • Francis.
  • Louis.
  • Coach.
  • Ellis.
  • Nick.
  • Rochelle.

They share one faction rather than being split into separate teams.

These additions expand the range of possible encounters without introducing new enemy types or scripted crossover campaigns.

How to Find and Spawn Factions

The addon requires Project A-Life to manage its NPCs.

After enabling both modifications:

  1. Open A-Life's Faction & NPC Creator.
  2. Search for Factions Expanded.
  3. Alternatively, enter a specific faction or character name.
  4. Browse the available presets.
  5. Use the Creator's existing tools to configure your preferred survivors and communities.

The catalog separates entries into four categories:

  • Originals.
  • The Walking Dead.
  • Zombieland.
  • Left 4 Dead.

Natural NPC Encounters

Finding characters in the world depends on A-Life's existing spawning mechanics.

Important factors include:

  • NPC population settings.
  • Number of days since the outbreak.
  • Current region.
  • Reputation and faction relationships.
  • Random selection.

A faction's 18 presets do not represent a maximum population of 18 survivors.

These are reusable character templates, and the same named preset can be selected more than once by A-Life.

Likewise, faction spawn regions represent eligible areas rather than prebuilt settlements.

The included field guide documents each group's possible regions and earliest appearance day.

Sandbox Settings and Spawn Control

Several options allow players to determine which factions may appear naturally.

Separate switches control:

  • Original Knox County groups.
  • The Walking Dead factions.
  • Zombieland characters.
  • Left 4 Dead survivors.

An additional setting adjusts overall spawn weight.

The 100 factions use conservative appearance weights and do not increase Project A-Life's NPC population cap.

Sandbox switches affect unedited natural spawning, while saved NPC identities remain preserved.

Groups already customized through the Creator retain their individual settings.

Requirements and Compatibility

Required components:

  • Project Zomboid: Build 42.21 or newer, subject to A-Life compatibility.
  • Project A-Life: Required.
  • Additional extensions: Optional.

The pack is designed to expand the existing A-Life faction catalog without replacing its main systems.

It is also intended to work alongside:

  • A-Life: Survivor Contracts.
  • Jeem Extension.

These additions maintain their own rules for contracts, trading and reputation.

Compatibility catalog checks were performed using:

Component Tested Version
Project A-Life 1.3.15
Survivor Contracts 0.2.0
Jeem Extension 0.4.6

Later releases may require additional compatibility testing.

Testing Status

The project passed 4,052 automated checks covering faction records, equipment references, reload behavior, Creator edits, deletion handling, sandbox switches and contract offers.

However, extended gameplay and multiplayer behavior still require further player testing.

Updating from A-Life: Knox Fractured

Existing users can update without switching to a separate Workshop item.

The internal mod identifier remains:

ALifeKnoxFractured

The update preserves all 24 original faction identifiers and 144 original preset identifiers.

Existing Creator modifications and deletion markers take priority over catalog defaults.

Recommended update procedure:

  1. Back up your important saves.
  2. Update the existing Workshop item.
  3. Restart Project Zomboid completely.
  4. Load your world and check the expanded faction catalog.

The new groups should then become available through A-Life's existing management interface.

Important Limitations

This is a faction and character preset expansion, not a complete NPC gameplay overhaul.

It does not introduce:

  • Custom character models.
  • Imported actor voice recordings.
  • Special infected.
  • Player-controlled zombie hordes.
  • Scripted television storylines.
  • Fully constructed faction bases.

Crossover appearances are interpretations created using available game assets.

Combat, equipment handling and NPC interactions follow Project A-Life's established systems.

The result is a significantly larger selection of survivors and communities for players who want more variety in their Knox County encounters, without replacing the underlying NPC framework.
