Detailed Vanilla Models - Part 2: Tools & Melee improves the appearance of 25 everyday tools and melee weapons in Project Zomboid. Familiar equipment receives redesigned 3D geometry and sharper textures, making it more convincing when held by your survivor.
The collection focuses on realistic materials, recognizable shapes and consistency with the original game's visual style. Wood grain, worn metal, chipped paint and accumulated grime give objects more character without changing their functionality.
Everything remains mechanically identical to vanilla, including damage, durability and other item statistics.
25 Weapons and Tools with Improved Models
The overhaul covers six equipment categories, from workshop essentials to improvised weapons.
| Category | Updated Items |
|---|---|
| Hammers | Hammer, ball-peen hammer, club hammer, sledgehammer |
| Axes | Fire axe, wood axe, hand axe, pickaxe |
| Bars and wrenches | Crowbar, lead pipe, pipe wrench, wrench, screwdriver |
| Blades | Kitchen knife, hunting knife, meat cleaver, machete, katana |
| Clubs | Baseball bat, wooden plank, golf club, nightstick |
| Gardening and kitchen | Shovel, garden fork, frying pan |
Each object retains its familiar silhouette and original colors.
More Realistic Materials
The updated textures emphasize the physical characteristics of different surfaces:
- Wood: Visible grain and natural variations.
- Steel: Worn metal, scratches and signs of use.
- Painted surfaces: Chipped coatings and exposed material.
- Handles and blades: More recognizable shapes and surface details.
- Everyday equipment: Dirt and subtle weathering suited to the original aesthetic.
After feedback on earlier releases, many models were rebuilt to remove excessive artistic embellishments and bring them closer to their vanilla counterparts.
Some minor geometry or texture imperfections may still be present.
Choose Between Original and Enhanced Models
One particularly useful feature is the ability to restore the original appearance of individual equipment groups.
Open:
Options > Mods
Each category has a Use Vanilla Model option.
For example, you can keep the original axes while using upgraded hammers, knives and other tools.
A game restart is required for these changes to take effect.
This gives players control over the visual overhaul without having to disable the entire modification.
Designed for Project Viewpoint
The series was developed with Project Viewpoint in mind.
When playing in first person, weapons and tools are much closer to the camera, revealing limitations in the original models.
The additional geometry and improved surface details make these objects more suitable for close-up viewing.
Project Viewpoint is optional. The upgraded equipment also appears correctly in the standard isometric perspective.
Compatibility and Existing Saves
The addon is visual-only and runs on the client side.
Rather than overwriting original game files, it introduces replacement assets under separate names.
Compatibility details:
- Tested version: Project Zomboid Build 42.21.
- Multiplayer: Supported.
- Existing saves: Safe to add or remove.
- Original item statistics: Unchanged.
- Vanilla game files: Not overwritten.
- First-person camera: Optional.
No additional weapons, crafting recipes or gameplay mechanics are introduced.
Existing inventory items keep their identities and functionality.
Part of the Detailed Vanilla Models Series
Tools & Melee belongs to a collection of standalone visual improvements covering different item categories.
Other releases focus on bags, lighting equipment, food, medicine, electronics, kitchen utensils, firearms and clothing accessories.
Each main installment can be installed independently.
The complete selection is available through Detailed Vanilla Models - Complete Series.
With improved materials and carefully redesigned shapes, this pack makes familiar survival equipment more visually detailed while keeping the original combat balance and item behavior intact.
