True Helicopter Events replaces Project Zomboid's scripted helicopter event with dynamic military operations. Aircraft patrol the map, search for survivors, communicate over radio frequencies and attract real zombie hordes along their routes. Features night searchlights, armed crews, military grid maps and customizable missions. Open beta for Build 42.21, single-player only.

True Helicopter Events completely reworks helicopter encounters in Project Zomboid, replacing the familiar scripted event with a dynamic military aviation system.
Instead of an aircraft appearing specifically to circle your character, helicopters carry out their own missions across Knox Country. They investigate designated locations, communicate with headquarters, monitor activity and return to base when fuel runs low.
The military does not automatically know where you are. A patrol must first discover your presence, creating encounters that depend on visibility, noise, surrounding terrain and your own behavior.
The modification is currently in open beta and supports Project Zomboid Build 42.21 in single-player.
Independent Military Helicopter Operations
The original helicopter event is disabled and replaced by two military aircraft operating from bases outside the playable map.
Their locations are:
- Northern base: Beyond the Louisville bridge.
- Southern base: Toward the real-world Fort Knox.
A central headquarters coordinates both helicopters, determining flight schedules and investigation targets.
The entire game world has been manually divided into operational areas, allowing aircraft to follow planned routes instead of concentrating exclusively on the player.
Flight operations include:
- Daily mission assignments.
- Investigation of selected locations.
- Radio communication between crews and headquarters.
- Reports after completing objectives.
- Fuel management and automatic returns to base.
- Reactions to activity detected during patrols.
Every morning at 06:00, headquarters broadcasts the day's briefing.
Helicopters carry out their assigned flights and report what they encounter. Once fuel reserves approach the amount needed for the return journey, the aircraft heads home.
Helicopters Affect Zombie Movement Across the Map
Military flights have consequences even when they happen far away.
The infected hear helicopter noise and react to aircraft moving across the world.
As a result, hordes can gradually shift along flight paths rather than gathering around the player's position.
Important details:
- Zombie reactions occur along the entire helicopter route.
- Flights can influence distant groups of infected.
- The system uses existing zombies from the game's virtual population.
- No additional zombies are spawned by the mod.
A patrol passing through another region may therefore change the distribution of infected before you ever encounter the aircraft yourself.
When a helicopter enters your visible area, its animated shadow appears on the ground. Lighting changes according to the sun or moon, helping you recognize its position.
Military Radio Frequencies and Mission Reports
Each military base operates on its own radio channel within the 30-88 MHz band.
Frequencies are generated separately for every game world.
You may occasionally find a radio with a military channel already saved. Otherwise, you must search for the correct frequency manually.
Once connected, you can listen to operational communications, including:
- Daily flight plans.
- Assigned investigation areas.
- Conversations between crews and bases.
- Reports about observed activity.
- Mission completion updates.
Listening to these transmissions provides information about military movements without requiring direct contact with the aircraft.
Military Grid Coordinates
Pilots do not identify locations using familiar settlement names.
Instead, they communicate through a military coordinate system.
The map is divided into large squares with designations such as:
Kilo-Mike 07
Each square is further divided into nine sections, corresponding to a numerical keypad.
For example, a transmission might mention:
Square Kilo-Mike 07, keypad 3
To interpret these coordinates, you need a military map.
It can be found among police and military loot.
Once obtained, the map provides a new interface button on the world map, where you can examine the military grid, adjust related settings and inspect aircraft information.
Additional Television News Reports
While WBLN News remains operational, two additional military aviation bulletins appear on television.
| Broadcast Time | Information |
|---|---|
| 09:30 | Locations scheduled for inspection today |
| 17:30 | Planned military flights for tomorrow |
These reports help you anticipate activity in different regions.
However, the broadcasts are available only while the television news service is still operating.
How Helicopters Detect Survivors
Military crews have a limited sight radius and do not possess supernatural knowledge of your location.
They can only identify activity that is visible or sufficiently loud from the aircraft.
Detection is influenced by several factors:
- Line of sight: Buildings and overhead obstacles can conceal your character.
- Roofs and tree canopies: Provide cover from observation above.
- Closed curtains: Can prevent detection through covered openings.
- Lighting: Artificial light may reveal your presence at night.
- Noise: Particularly loud sounds can attract attention.
- Traits and skills: Influence visibility.
- Camouflage: Affects how easily the crew can spot you.
Nighttime flights may use a searchlight to illuminate areas below.
What Happens After Detection?
If a crew spots your character, it may begin circling and tracking your movements.
The helicopter also reports its observations to headquarters.
Losing visual contact does not necessarily end the encounter.
The aircraft can search the last known location, follow a moving vehicle or remember an area for possible investigation later.
Avoiding detection is different from escaping after being spotted. The latter may require more careful movement and effective use of cover.
Armed Crews, Warning Orders and Machine Guns
Military helicopters carry a door gunner, but the crew does not automatically attack every survivor.
Use of force depends on decisions made by headquarters.
When zombies threaten people, a helicopter may provide covering fire against the infected.
While WBLN News is still broadcasting, the military does not fire on people.
Later, crews may react to behavior such as carrying weapons, shooting or attempting to drive away.
Megaphone Commands
A helicopter can issue orders through its loudspeaker, including:
- Cease fire.
- Drop your weapon.
- Stop your vehicle.
- Remain still.
- Leave the area.
The crew monitors whether the instructions are followed.
Ignoring an order can lead to a final warning and eventually gunfire.
The latest update also changes aircraft behavior: shooting no longer automatically drives a helicopter away.
Optional Zombie and Vehicle Reports
An additional reporting feature allows crews to announce concentrations of infected and distant vehicles.
This functionality requires a manual installation step.
Installation instructions for Build 42.21:
- Open the mod's
B42.21_Manual_Installfolder. - Copy the
zombiefolder into your Project Zomboid game directory. - Enable Zombie reports in the sandbox settings.
The folder must be copied again after mod updates.
Important: After a game update on Build 42.21, delete the following folder as instructed by the developer:
ProjectZomboid\zombie\popman
This is an additional installation procedure, not part of ordinary Workshop activation.
Sandbox Configuration
All major helicopter behavior options are available through the game's sandbox settings.
Players can customize military encounters and adapt the system to their preferred survival experience.
The detailed list of individual sandbox parameters is not provided in the source description.
Compatibility and Known Limitations
Requirements and current support:
- Game version: Build 42.21.
- Single-player: Supported.
- Multiplayer: Not supported.
- Project Viewpoint: Not supported.
- Vanilla helicopter modifications: May conflict.
- Custom maps: Radio reports use military grid coordinates only.
- NPC modifications: Not currently supported.
Helicopters may identify NPCs from other mods as zombies, so combining these systems is not recommended without further compatibility updates.
As an open beta, the project may also contain unfinished features or unexpected behavior.
Planned Features
Future development plans include:
- Helicopter crashes.
- News helicopters.
- Humanitarian aircraft.
- NPC compatibility.
These features are planned and should not be considered available in the current version.
True Helicopter Events transforms helicopters into independent participants in the game world. Their missions can move zombie hordes, create unexpected encounters and influence survival decisions, even when the player is nowhere near the aircraft.
