Radio Voices brings Knox County's broadcasts to life in Project Zomboid with 247 distinct voices, over 8 hours of dialogue and 118 music tracks. Radio stations, television programs, commercials, VHS tapes and CDs receive voiced performances with synchronized subtitles. Includes spoken weather forecasts, multiplayer support and compatibility with existing saves.
Contents
Radio Voices transforms the audio experience of Project Zomboid by giving characters from the game's radio stations, television programs and recorded media their own voices.
Previously, survivors experienced much of Knox County's unfolding disaster through written dialogue accompanied by static. Now broadcasters speak, advertisements feature performances, television shows have audible conversations, and recorded media includes music and narration.
The project covers vanilla broadcasts with hundreds of distinct voices, thousands of recorded lines and soundtracks designed around the atmosphere of Kentucky in 1993.
247 Voices and Over 8 Hours of Dialogue
The modification contains an extensive audio library covering the game's original media content.
| Content | Amount |
|---|---|
| Distinct character voices | 247 |
| Spoken dialogue lines | 13,896 |
| Unique audio recordings | 9,099 |
| Total recorded speech | Over 8 hours |
| Radio stations | 8 |
| Television channels | 10 |
| Advertisements | 73 |
| VHS tapes | 283 |
| CDs | 69 |
| Songs and musical pieces | 118 |
| Scheduled broadcasts | 905 |
The Automated Emergency Broadcast System also receives spoken weather reports based on current in-game conditions.
Emotional Voice Performances
Dialogue is designed to reflect the characters and situations being portrayed.
A frightened survivor may speak with panic, while a news presenter delivers information professionally. Other performances include shouting, whispering, crying and dry humor.
The result adds personality to conversations and broadcasts that were previously presented primarily as text.
Fully Voiced Radio Stations
Eight existing stations receive complete voice coverage:
| Station | Frequency |
|---|---|
| LBMW | 93.2 MHz |
| NNR | 98.0 MHz |
| KnoxTalk | 101.2 MHz |
| Hitz FM | 89.4 MHz |
| USR | 94.2 MHz |
| Civilian Radio | 91.2 MHz |
| Unknown Frequency | 107.6 MHz |
| Military Numbers Station | 95.0 MHz |
Each channel retains its original identity, programming and dialogue.
Listening to emergency announcements, civilian conversations and military communications becomes a more atmospheric part of surviving the outbreak.
Television, VHS Tapes and CDs
Audio support extends beyond ordinary radio broadcasts.
Ten television channels are covered:
- Triple-N.
- WBLN News.
- PawsTV.
- TURBO.
- Life and Living TV.
- KPATV.
- Brennan Movie Channel.
- National Sports TV.
- GBC.
- Music Video Channel.
The collection also includes 283 retail and homemade VHS tapes alongside 69 CDs.
Depending on the original material, recordings can contain spoken dialogue, audiobooks, sermons or songs.
Commercials receive individual musical arrangements and performances suited to the products being advertised.
Music Inspired by 1993
The soundtrack is designed to complement the setting rather than introduce unrelated modern music.
Different types of programming receive appropriate musical styles.
For example:
- Radio stations feature music suited to their programming.
- Furniture advertisements can use cheerful banjo jingles.
- Perfume commercials may include atmospheric saxophone arrangements.
- Film trailers receive dramatic background scores.
- Television shows and VHS recordings preserve their intended mood.
Some in-game songs refer to real musical works. The modification includes vocal performances synchronized with their on-screen lyrics.
The collection contains 118 songs and musical pieces in total.
Synchronized Audio and Subtitles
A major improvement concerns the timing of dialogue.
Text remains visible until the corresponding voice recording finishes playing. This prevents subtitles from advancing ahead of the spoken performance.
Important features:
- English-language voice recordings.
- On-screen text displayed in the player's selected game language.
- Dialogue timing synchronized with audio.
- Original radio static, clicks and beeps preserved.
- Existing broadcast schedules retained.
This means players can enjoy English voice performances while continuing to read the dialogue in Russian or another supported game language.
Spoken Weather Forecasts
The Automated Emergency Broadcast System receives full voice support.
Instead of relying entirely on text, the system reads the actual in-game weather forecast aloud.
This makes emergency transmissions more useful for players who prefer listening to the radio while organizing supplies or performing activities around their base.
Multiplayer and Save Compatibility
Radio Voices supports both single-player and multiplayer.
It changes the audio presentation without introducing additional items, world objects or map modifications.
Compatibility details:
- Can be enabled during an existing playthrough.
- Can be disabled without requiring a new save.
- Does not introduce new save data.
- Supports the original radio, TV and recorded-media content.
- Leaves the game's existing broadcast text available.
Backing up important saves before changing a mod collection remains recommended.
Conflicts with Other Voice Mods
Do not combine this project with modifications that provide voice acting for the same vanilla broadcasts, such as Voiced Radio and TVs.
Using both may cause overlapping dialogue.
Stations introduced by other mods are not included in the voice library. Their written messages remain available, but they do not receive new performances.
The original generic radio murmur is also muted.
Current Development and Future Plans
All original radio stations, television channels, VHS tapes, CDs, songs and emergency weather broadcasts are included in the current release.
Further improvements are planned.
Upcoming work includes:
- Additional sound effects.
- Audio refinements.
- Bug fixes and general polish.
Final Frequencies - Planned Expansion
A larger future update, currently titled Final Frequencies, aims to fill the long periods of silence between existing broadcasts.
The planned content includes original news reports, extended talk shows, interviews, advertisements, music and early emergency warnings.
The concept covers approximately one in-game month, with programming gradually reflecting the collapse of civilization.
Localized text is planned for the game's supported languages.
This expansion is not part of the current feature set.
How the Audio Was Created
The voice performances were generated using ElevenLabs, while original musical compositions were produced with Suno.
No human voice actors participated in the current recordings.
Existing dialogue originates from Project Zomboid, while the additional audio provides a new way to experience that material. Real songs included in the collection remain associated with their respective rights holders.
Radio Voices gives familiar broadcasts a new sense of presence. The news can sound increasingly desperate, conversations become more expressive, and music helps recreate the atmosphere of the final days before Knox County falls silent.
