More Car Features + Spawn Zones Expansion is an extensive vehicle overhaul for Project Zomboid, introducing dozens of quality-of-life improvements, realistic interactions and additional vehicle spawn locations across Kentucky.

The modification expands traffic jams, improves abandoned car distributions, introduces new mechanics for refueling and repairs, and makes vehicles more interactive.

Designed as a collection of features that could fit naturally into the base game, the addon also provides detailed sandbox settings for customizing nearly every major system.

Supports Project Zomboid Build 42.20 Stable, single-player and multiplayer. Compatible with modded vehicles and safe to add or remove from existing saves.

Expanded Vehicle Spawning

The modification adds thousands of vehicle spawn zones throughout the game world.

New locations include:

  • Residential garages.
  • Gas stations.
  • Farms and rural areas.
  • Parking lots.
  • Traffic jams and highways.
  • Additional urban and roadside locations.

Vehicle placement becomes more varied, allowing cars to appear in places that previously had limited or no spawns.

Improved Traffic Jams and Junkyards

Traffic congestion receives additional attention.

Large vehicle jams can contain more abandoned cars, wrecks and damaged equipment.

Other improvements include:

  • Randomly removed vehicle parts.
  • Open doors and windows.
  • Rebalanced vehicle condition.
  • Burned and heavily damaged wrecks.
  • Cars facing different directions in certain parking areas.

These changes help recreate the chaotic aftermath of the initial outbreak.

Realistic Vehicle Interactions

The addon introduces several useful mechanics that expand how players interact with cars.

Improved Gas Station Refueling

A reworked refueling system makes filling a vehicle at gas stations more interactive.

Players no longer need to remain stationary throughout the entire process.

The system also includes:

  • Additional refueling sounds.
  • Fuel pump status.
  • Consequences for driving away while still connected to a pump.
  • The ability to repair a damaged or detached pump.

The mechanic can be enabled or disabled through sandbox settings.

Jumping Out of Moving Vehicles

Survivors can exit vehicles while they are moving.

However, jumping at high speed can cause serious injuries.

The damage can be adjusted in sandbox settings.

In multiplayer, this feature is disabled for drivers because of significant synchronization problems observed during testing.

Weather and Vehicle Interiors

Weather can now affect characters inside vehicles when:

  • A door is open.
  • A window is lowered.
  • The windshield is broken.

This makes damaged vehicles less effective at protecting occupants from environmental conditions.

New Vehicle Controls and Access

Several additional interactions make operating cars more convenient.

  • Door controls - Lock, unlock, open and close your own door while seated.
  • Electronic windows - Drivers can operate individual windows.
  • Trunk access - Enter or exit certain vehicles through the trunk when the interior layout allows it.
  • Hotwire removal - Restore hotwired vehicles using Electrical Level 3 and Mechanics Level 2.
  • Battery removal - Special interaction allows removing batteries while the engine is running, subject to the in-game instructions.

Electronic Window Controls

As the driver:

  1. Press Z to access the vehicle seat interface.
  2. Hold LEFT ALT or RIGHT ALT.
  3. Select the desired window.
  4. Click it or press the corresponding number key.

This allows individual windows to be operated without manually interacting with each one from outside.

Crafting, Repairs and Additional Storage

The modification also expands the usefulness of vehicle components.

Vehicle Crafting Surfaces

Hoods, trunks and trailers can function as crafting surfaces for recipes that normally require a table.

Additional Recipes

New crafting and repair options include:

  • Copying car keys.
  • Smelting vehicle parts into steel.
  • Crafting tires.
  • Manufacturing windows and windshield glass.
  • Repairing tires and mufflers.
  • Cutting tire pieces from world tire stacks.
  • Extracting propane from large industrial tanks.

Copying vehicle keys requires learning the same magazine knowledge used for the vanilla Copy Building Key recipe.

Trailers and Pickup Trucks

Standard trailers can have their covers installed or removed.

Advertisement trailers receive usable storage accessible from either open side.

Pickup trucks can also provide additional rear seating for transporting passengers or corpses.

The additional occupants may not be visually displayed because of game engine limitations.

Vehicle Explosives

Explosives gain additional interactions with automobiles.

Bombs can trigger car alarms and may be attached to vehicles at locations such as:

  • Doors.
  • Areas above wheels.
  • Ignition components.

Supported explosive types include smoke, pipe, aerosol and remotely triggered devices.

These interactions can be disabled through sandbox settings.

Sandbox Configuration

One of the most important features is the extensive customization system.

Setting Function
No Vanilla Vehicles Prevents standard vehicles from spawning
Vehicle Spawn Rate Adjusts general vehicle frequency
Traffic Jams in Louisville Enables or disables added Louisville traffic
Traffic Jams Outside Louisville Controls congestion elsewhere
Random Vehicle Angles Randomizes orientation in selected zones
Corpses in Vehicles Adjusts corpse spawn frequency
Burned Vehicles Controls the percentage of burned wrecks
Vehicle Quality Customizes vehicle condition
Good Vehicle Prevention Disables high-quality vanilla vehicle spawns
Refueling System Enables or disables new pump mechanics
Weather Effects Controls exposure inside damaged vehicles
Moving Vehicle Exit Toggles jumping out and adjusts damage
Vehicle Bombs Enables or disables explosive interactions
Propane Amounts Sets industrial propane tank quantities

By default, approximately 8% of vehicles may contain a corpse under the Normal setting.

The general vehicle spawn rate falls back to vanilla when no custom value is entered, although junkyards and certain traffic jam zones use separate rules.

Special Vehicles and KI5 Compatibility

The addon includes several additional details:

  • Jackie Jaye's LBMW Radio Van, appearing near her trailer north of the main Louisville military checkpoint.
  • A reference to The Walking Dead involving an overturned prison bus in Rosewood, provided the required KI5 vehicle mod is installed.
  • Support for specialized vehicle distributions and compatible modded vehicles.

For additional military vehicle placement options, see Modded Military Vehicle Zones.

Players using the KI5 vehicle collection can also install Specific Loot for KI5 Vehicles to enable corpse spawning on compatible vehicle seats, following that addon's load order instructions.

Installation and Compatibility

Feature Status
Game version Build 42.20 Stable
Single-player Supported
Multiplayer Supported with limitations
Modded vehicles Supported
Existing saves Safe to add or remove
Sandbox customization Extensive
Climbable Vehicles Experimental, not recommended

Place More Car Features + Spawn Zones Expansion near the top of the mod list, but after map mods.

If you want to remove or replace vanilla vehicles, use the built-in No Vanilla Vehicles sandbox option instead of a separate replacement-removal modification to avoid compatibility problems.

Climbable Vehicles Warning

The optional climbing system is outdated and not working in multiplayer.

It must be enabled manually through sandbox settings, but the developer recommends using it only for screenshots.

Its functionality is no longer actively verified, and it may eventually move to a separate modification.

More Car Features + Spawn Zones Expansion makes cars, trailers, traffic jams and vehicle-related survival mechanics more varied. From improved world spawning to interactive fuel pumps and additional repair options, it offers extensive customization for players who want a more detailed transportation system.
