Contents
LG Tape XP Indicator improves VHS and CD management in Project Zomboid by showing exactly what each recording can teach your character.
Instead of watching every tape to discover whether it contains useful information, you can check its experience rewards, skill bonuses and recipes directly from your inventory.
According to the developer, only 62 of the game's 352 recordings provide educational content. This addon helps identify the valuable ones before spending time watching them.
Designed for Project Zomboid Build 42.20 and newer, it supports single-player, hosted multiplayer and dedicated servers.
How Does It Work?
Simply hover your mouse over a VHS tape to view its educational information.
For a more detailed breakdown, right-click the recording and select Tape XP details.
The interface displays:
- Skills taught by the recording.
- Total experience points available.
- XP rewards for individual skills.
- Experience your character can still earn.
- Number of recipes included.
- Recipes already learned.
- Remaining unwatched segments.
- Skill levels that have reached the media XP cap.
Example of a Tape Tooltip
A recording might display the following information:
Teaches (350 XP total)
Carpentry +7 (350 XP) - 100 XP left
2 recipes - 1 new
This example indicates that the tape originally offers 350 Carpentry XP, but only 100 XP remains available to the current character.
It also contains two recipes, one of which has not yet been learned.
Color-Coded Rewards
Information is highlighted using different colors.
| Color | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | Experience still available |
| Orange | Skill has reached the maximum level for media XP |
| Gray | Content already watched or learned |
| Blue | Recipe-related information |
If a recording provides no skill experience, the tooltip displays No skill XP.
This makes it easier to decide which tapes are worth keeping or watching.
Accurate XP Tracking
The modification reads experience values directly from recording data rather than relying on manually maintained reward lists.
This means the displayed information reflects the actual values associated with each tape.
It also respects the game's Maximum Media XP Level setting.
Each educational segment can award its experience only once per character. Previously watched content is therefore accounted for when calculating remaining rewards.
Automatic Support for Modded Recordings
LG Tape XP Indicator also recognizes educational VHS tapes and CDs introduced by other modifications.
Because the addon reads the information directly from each recording, it does not require a predefined list of compatible Workshop mods.
Supported recording data is detected automatically, making the interface useful even in heavily modified playthroughs.

Does It Change Experience Rewards?
No. The addon only displays information.
It does not:
- Award additional XP.
- Modify existing recipes.
- Change recording rewards.
- Store additional data in saves.
- Send gameplay information over the network.
On multiplayer servers, it must still be included in the server's mod list.
The modification can be installed or removed from existing saves without affecting world progression.
For additional instructions, consult the How to Use guide or the FAQ.
LG Tape XP Indicator is a lightweight quality-of-life improvement that makes educational recordings more transparent. By showing available experience, recipe rewards and viewing progress, it helps survivors prioritize useful tapes without wasting valuable in-game time.
