KI5 Engine Sounds is an audio overhaul for Project Zomboid that gives KI5 vehicles distinctive engine sounds based on their real-world counterparts. Instead of relying on generic vehicle audio, each supported model receives a sound profile that reflects its engine configuration and trim.
A 1969 Dodge Charger produces the deep rumble of an American V8, a Volkswagen Golf sounds like a compact four-cylinder car, and a Porsche 911 delivers the recognizable character of an air-cooled flat-six.
The system also introduces dynamic throttle responses, authentic diesel recordings and environmental effects that change depending on the road surface.
Designed for Build 42.21 and newer, it works in both single-player and multiplayer.
24 Engine Families with Distinctive Sounds
The modification includes 24 engine categories covering classic cars, modern performance vehicles, trucks, agricultural machinery and smaller utility vehicles.
American V8 engines:
- Big-block muscle V8.
- Dodge Charger 440 / Hemi.
- Small-block V8.
- Luxury V8.
- Truck V8.
Diesel engines:
- Diesel V8.
- Heavy truck diesel.
- Detroit two-stroke diesel.
- Small car diesel.
Six-cylinder engines:
- Straight-six.
- Twin-turbo six.
- Porsche air-cooled flat-six.
- Naturally aspirated V6.
- Turbocharged V6.
- VTEC V6.
Four-cylinder engines:
- Economy four-cylinder.
- Twin-cam four-cylinder.
- VTEC four-cylinder.
- Turbocharged four-cylinder.
- Subaru boxer.
- Volkswagen air-cooled four-cylinder.
Other configurations:
- V12.
- Four-cylinder farm tractor engine.
- Single-cylinder golf cart engine.
Each family has a recognizable acoustic character, making it easier to distinguish different vehicles by sound alone.
Authentic Engines for Different Vehicle Trims
One important feature is the assignment of audio profiles according to the actual engines installed in specific car versions.
For example, the 1982 Pontiac Firebird does not always receive the same sound.
- Base Firebird: Iron Duke four-cylinder.
- Firebird Trans Am: V8 engine.
This distinction also applies to other KI5 vehicles with different powertrains.
Models released in the future can receive a corresponding engine family through name-based identification, although this fallback is not equivalent to a manually verified engine and trim mapping.
Additional Supported Vehicles
The system also covers:
- Honda Civic EK9 Type R: B16B VTEC.
- Honda NSX NA1: C30A V6 VTEC with an 8300 RPM fuel cut.
The NSX is described as an upcoming vehicle mod, so its inclusion should not be interpreted as confirmation that the car itself is already released.
Dynamic RPM, Throttle and Engine Behavior
The audio does more than play a different recording for each model.
Its character changes according to engine speed and load.
Included effects:
- Separate full-throttle and closed-throttle sounds.
- Engine pitch and behavior responding to RPM.
- Turbocharger whistle.
- Recorded diesel engine audio.
- Authentic starter sounds.
- Cooling fan noise for air-cooled engines.
- Individual startup and shutdown effects.
- Fuel cut sounds at the engine's redline.
Petrol engines have defined RPM limits. Holding the throttle at the redline produces the distinctive knocking effect associated with fuel cut.
These details help differentiate a high-revving sports car from a heavy diesel truck or classic American muscle car.
Road Surface and Driving Effects
Vehicle audio is not limited to the motor.
A separate sound layer responds to the surface beneath the wheels.
Supported road materials:
- Asphalt.
- Gravel.
- Dirt.
- Grass.
- Sand.
- Snow.
- Wet roads.
- Wood.
Additional effects cover skidding, braking and driving on bare wheel rims.
Combined with the engine simulation, these recordings provide more varied audio feedback during travel.
Audio Settings and Customization
Sound parameters can be adjusted through:
Options > Mods > KI5 Engine Sounds
Available settings:
| Option | Function |
|---|---|
| Engine Volume | Adjusts motor volume from 0% to 200% |
| Road Volume | Controls road surface audio from 0% to 200% |
| Vehicle Count | Adjusts how many vehicles can play sounds |
| Debug Overlay | Displays diagnostic information |
Both volume controls have a default reference level of 100%, representing the original loudness of the mod's audio.
The game's regular Vehicle Engine slider also affects both categories.
This allows players to balance the motor and road effects separately while retaining control through the standard sound settings.
Multiplayer and Vehicle Compatibility
Audio can be heard by the driver, passengers and nearby players.
Requirements and limitations:
- Game version: Build 42.21 or newer.
- Single-player: Supported.
- Multiplayer: Supported.
- Additional dependencies: None required for the sound system itself.
- Affected vehicles: Installed KI5 vehicle models.
- Original engine audio: Completely replaced on supported cars.
The modification does not automatically add vehicles. You need the corresponding KI5 car mods for their sound replacements to have an effect.
In multiplayer, distant vehicles outside a player's loaded area are not audible through this system. The approximate limitation is 100 or more tiles, depending on the loaded area.
Does It Change Zombie Attraction?
No.
The new audio affects what players hear, but it does not alter the game's underlying vehicle noise mechanics.
Zombies continue responding according to the original attraction system, regardless of how loud or aggressive a particular engine sounds to the player.
Audio Sources and Production
Petrol engine sounds were created using the open-source engine-sim project, with engine presets and modified configurations.
Turbocharger and cooling fan layers use separate synthesis.
Diesel motors, starters and road effects incorporate real recordings from several sound libraries. The source material includes assets distributed under MIT, Creative Commons and public-domain terms, depending on the recording.
Detailed attribution and licensing information is available in the mod's CREDITS.txt file.
KI5 Engine Sounds is especially suitable for players who enjoy realistic vehicles and want each car to feel mechanically distinct. Whether driving a classic V8, a diesel utility truck or a compact hatchback, the audio now reflects the character of the machinery beneath the hood.
