Immersive Blackouts adds unpredictable electricity and water outages to Project Zomboid. Utilities can temporarily shut down and recover, lights flicker before failures, and emergency radio broadcasts warn survivors on 89.2 MHz. Features customizable sandbox settings, multiplayer support and safe installation in existing saves.

Immersive Blackouts introduces a dynamic infrastructure system to Project Zomboid, making electricity and water supplies less predictable during the early stages of the Knox Event.
Civilization has not completely collapsed yet. Somewhere inside the exclusion zone, remaining personnel are still trying to maintain power stations and water facilities. However, limited resources and deteriorating equipment make interruptions increasingly common.
Instead of functioning normally until a permanent shutdown, utilities can temporarily fail and recover, creating new challenges for survivors.
The modification supports single-player, multiplayer and existing saves.
Dynamic Electricity and Water Outages
The main feature is a system of temporary utility failures.
By default, the mod checks for events every 10 in-game minutes.
| Event | Default Chance |
|---|---|
| Electricity or water shuts off | 1% |
| Electricity or water is restored | 5% |
| Event check interval | 10 in-game minutes |
These values can be changed through Sandbox Options.
For example, electricity may suddenly disappear while the player is organizing supplies or cooking. After some time, power might return as the remaining infrastructure temporarily recovers.
Water outages work similarly.
Gradual Infrastructure Collapse
Temporary interruptions continue until the game's permanent water or electricity shutdown occurs.
After a utility has permanently shut down, the modification stops managing that system.
This preserves the long-term survival progression of Project Zomboid while making the period before the final collapse less predictable.
Flickering Lights Before Blackouts
Before an electricity outage, nearby lights can flicker as a visual warning of an approaching failure.
This adds atmosphere to indoor exploration, especially during nighttime.
Light flickering is configured individually through Mod Options, rather than the shared sandbox settings.
In multiplayer, each player can choose whether to display the effect.
Photosensitivity warning: Flickering and flashing lights may trigger seizures or other adverse reactions in sensitive individuals. Disable the effect if necessary.
KERS Emergency Radio - 89.2 MHz
Immersive Blackouts includes an automated emergency broadcast service called Knox Emergency Regional Infrastructure Service (KERS).
Tune your radio to 89.2 MHz to receive information about the condition of regional utilities.
Broadcasts may include:
- Warnings about upcoming electricity outages.
- Notices about possible water supply interruptions.
- Current infrastructure status updates.
- Emergency announcements.
- Corrupted transmissions and radio static.
- Occasional survivor broadcasts.
The radio system provides a lore-friendly explanation for ongoing infrastructure failures while giving players another reason to monitor emergency frequencies.
Sandbox Settings
The addon provides several options for customizing utility behavior.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Blackout Chance | Probability of a temporary outage |
| Restoration Chance | Probability of utility recovery |
| Shutoff Days Range | Randomized period when shutdowns can occur |
| Water Events | Enable or disable temporary water outages |
| Electricity Events | Enable or disable temporary power outages |
| Light Flickering | Personal setting in Mod Options |
Setting the relevant event chance to 0% disables that type of event.
Players can create anything from occasional infrastructure disruptions to frequent interruptions that make everyday survival less reliable.
Compatibility and Multiplayer
| Feature | Status |

| Existing saves | Safe to add or remove |
| Individual flickering settings | Supported |
| Permanent utility shutdown | Respects vanilla progression |

The developer also lists compatibility with:
Additional community translations are no longer included in the main mod because they became outdated. Only English and Russian are currently maintained within the release.
Debug Tools and Modding Support
Administrators with Debug enabled can manually trigger or change temporary outage events through the context menu.
This functionality is unavailable after a utility has permanently shut down.

For developers, two global Lua variables expose the current infrastructure state:
ImmersiveBlackouts_isWaterShut
ImmersiveBlackouts_isBlackout
They are intended for checking whether water or electricity is currently unavailable.
These variables should be read, not modified, since changing them may cause unexpected behavior.
Immersive Blackouts makes the gradual collapse of Knox County feel more believable. Unexpected power failures, temporary recoveries and emergency broadcasts create uncertainty without replacing the game's permanent utility shutdown mechanics.
