Detailed Vanilla Models - Part 1: Lights & Bags is a visual overhaul for Project Zomboid that improves the appearance of everyday survival equipment. Backpacks, flashlights, lanterns, duffel bags and tactical accessories receive more detailed 3D models and textures while retaining their original gameplay properties.

The collection was developed with close-up viewing in mind, especially for players using Project Viewpoint. However, the upgraded items look just as natural in the standard isometric perspective.

Version 2.0 introduces completely rebuilt bag models, with improved shapes, stitching and materials designed to preserve the familiar vanilla aesthetic.

What's New in Version 2.0?

Earlier versions received criticism because some bags appeared too soft and lacked realistic construction.

The updated designs have been manually remodeled to better resemble actual carrying equipment.

Improvements include:

  • Separate front and back panels connected by fabric gussets.
  • Defined seams with decorative piping.
  • Pockets with their own three-dimensional construction.
  • Functional-looking zippers and pullers.
  • Webbing straps with buckles.
  • Reinforced edges and fabric flaps.
  • Softer folds and natural sagging on duffel bags.

Crafted backpacks receive a different visual treatment.

Their rough construction is represented through heavy stitching, patches, wooden toggles and ropes securing the bags to their frames.

The redesign also removes some of the artistic elements from earlier releases to bring the models closer to Project Zomboid's original appearance.

Some minor texture and geometry imperfections may remain.

Improved Flashlights and Lanterns

The lighting equipment category includes several familiar survival items.

Updated models:

  • Standard flashlight.
  • Angle-head flashlight.
  • Pen light.
  • Hand torch.
  • Candle.
  • Hurricane lanterns in different finishes.
  • Propane lantern.
  • Glass lantern.

These objects receive more detailed geometry and textures, making them easier to recognize when held or placed in the world.

The changes are purely visual and do not introduce new lighting mechanics.

Backpacks, Duffel Bags and Other Storage Equipment

A large part of the overhaul focuses on containers worn or carried by survivors.

Supported items include:

  • Hiking bags and large hiking bags.
  • School backpacks.
  • Duffel bags with their original print variations.
  • Satchels.
  • Fanny packs.
  • Hydration packs.
  • Golf bags.
  • Rifle cases.
  • Fishing creels.
  • Crude leather bags.
  • Sheet slings.
  • Crafted frame backpacks.
  • ALICE belt equipment.

The updated shapes better represent different materials and construction methods.

For example, a fabric duffel bag folds and sags rather than appearing as a rigid cylinder, while handmade equipment uses rougher seams and improvised fasteners.

Tactical Equipment

The pack also improves the appearance of:

  • Ammunition straps.
  • Shoulder holsters.
  • Chest rigs.

These accessories receive more detailed models while preserving their existing functions.

Optional ALICE Pack

An additional module is included for players who want a redesigned ALICE backpack.

It is available as:

Detailed Vanilla Models - ALICE Pack

When enabled, the backpack receives several visual improvements:

  • Fabric flap.
  • Reinforced edges.
  • Expandable side pockets.
  • Detailed buckles and attachments.

This module is optional.

If you prefer the original ALICE backpack, leave the additional component disabled while keeping the main Lights & Bags overhaul active.

Better Equipment Positioning

The replacement models have different versions depending on how an item is used.

They are displayed appropriately when:

  • Worn on the character.
  • Held in the hands.
  • Dropped or placed on the ground.

Both male and female characters are supported.

Straps are also positioned to sit over jackets and coats instead of sinking into clothing.

This is particularly noticeable with backpacks and shoulder-mounted accessories.

Project Viewpoint Support

The Detailed Vanilla Models series was created to improve how everyday objects appear when using the first-person perspective of Project Viewpoint.

At close distances, simple vanilla geometry and low-detail textures become easier to notice.

The replacement assets provide more convincing shapes and surface details for this viewing style.

Project Viewpoint is not required. The improvements also work in the classic camera mode.

Technical Details and Performance

The models are designed to provide additional visual detail without excessive geometric complexity.

Specification Value
Maximum model complexity Up to 4,000 triangles
Texture resolution 1024 px
Tested game version Build 42.21
Multiplayer Supported
Existing saves Safe to add or remove
Gameplay changes None

If the replacement textures appear blurry, increase the texture quality in the game's display settings.

The addon operates on the client side and does not change the weight, capacity, durability or other statistics of the original equipment.

Compatibility with Other Mods

The overhaul replaces vanilla model and texture files.

As a result, other modifications that use the same original items may also display the updated visuals.

However, if another addon provides its own replacement for the same object and loads afterward, its model can take priority.

There are no additional mandatory dependencies specified for this part of the collection.

Other Detailed Vanilla Models Modules

Lights & Bags is the first installment of a larger series covering different categories of equipment.

Other releases improve tools, melee weapons, food, medical supplies, electronics, kitchen utensils, musical instruments, smoking accessories and firearms.

Additional packages offer 3D gloves, enhanced vehicle textures and higher-resolution clothing.

Each part can be installed independently, subject to its own requirements.

This visual overhaul is well suited to survivors who want backpacks, lighting equipment and tactical accessories to look more convincing without altering inventory capacity, item behavior or the balance of the original game.
