Build Your Own Kayak introduces a fully functional, craftable kayak to Project Zomboid Build 42. Survivors can construct a small boat from basic materials and use it to explore the rivers and lakes of Knox Country.
The modification adds a detailed construction process, paddling mechanics, onboard storage, fishing and shooting from the water. A built-in light also makes nighttime travel possible.
Alternatively, lucky survivors may discover a ready-made kayak while searching storage units.
Supports Build 42, single-player and multiplayer. No additional dependencies are required.
How to Build a Kayak
Crafting your own boat involves several stages, from learning the necessary recipes to assembling the wooden frame.
First, you must unlock 11 crafting recipes using one of two methods:
- Read the Paddle Craft magazine.
- Watch the Paddle Craft tape on a VCR.
Required Skills
| Skill | Required Level |
|---|---|
| Carving | 4 |
| Carpentry | 5 |
| Tailoring | 1 |
Construction Process
- Prepare the ribs. Carve wooden ribs from saplings and steam them in a pot of very hot water.
- Build the frame. Cut deck beams and stringers from planks, then assemble the structure.
- Cover the hull. Use tarps or tanned leather to create the kayak's outer covering.
- Install a light. Attach a flashlight to a pole using tape.
- Finish the kayak. Paint it yellow and black.
- Prepare a paddle. Carve your own double-bladed paddle or use one you find while exploring.
The construction process gives woodworking and tailoring skills an additional purpose during survival.
Finding a Ready-Made Kayak
You do not necessarily need to craft everything yourself.
Up to two completed kayaks, each supplied with a paddle, may appear in previously unexplored storage units.
Paddling and Water Travel
Once your boat is ready, carry it to a suitable shoreline.
Right-click beside the water to launch it, or right-click a kayak resting on the shore to board.
Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| W / A / S / D | Paddle and steer |
| SHIFT | Paddle faster |
| E | Get out onto nearby land |
| Right Mouse Button | Access kayak interactions |
| Controller Left Stick | Move, with full input increasing speed |
Paddling consumes stamina. Traveling at higher speeds tires your character more quickly.
Controller functionality is implemented but has not yet been personally tested by the developer.
Safety Near Zombies
You cannot enter or exit the kayak when a zombie is within 6 tiles.
This restriction makes choosing a safe landing area important.
When you disembark onto nearby land, the kayak remains on the shore rather than disappearing.
Fishing and Shooting from the Kayak
The addon allows players to perform several activities without leaving their seat.
Fishing
While paddling, open the right-click menu and stow your paddle in its clips.
Once it is secured, you can fish directly from the kayak using any fishing rod.
Retrieve the paddle when you are ready to continue traveling.
Firearms
You can also shoot from the seated position using any gun.
Hold the aiming control to aim your weapon. The kayak turns to follow your aiming direction.
When you release the control, the character returns to the normal seated position.
Storage and Nighttime Travel
The kayak provides 20 units of storage capacity for transporting supplies.
While paddling, the boat and everything stored inside it contribute no carrying weight to the character.
A pole-mounted light is also available for traveling after dark.
The kayak light does not require batteries.
Saving and quitting while on the water is supported. Upon reloading, your character returns to the kayak seat.
Compatibility and Multiplayer
| Feature | Status |

The addon includes English, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, German and 22 additional languages. The translations were produced using AI and may contain inaccuracies.
Dedicated Server Configuration
For the kayak to move away from shore, keep the server setting:
AntiCheatNoClip = 4
This is the default disabled setting specified by the developer.
Changing it may prevent the boat from leaving the shoreline.
Important Warning Before Removing the Mod
Removing the addon without preparation can cause permanent item loss or leave characters stranded on the water.
Before uninstalling:
- Make sure every player has returned to land.
- Exit all kayaks.
- Empty every kayak's storage.
- Move valuable items into normal containers.
- Only then disable or remove the modification.
When the mod is removed, kayaks, their components and any items stored inside them are deleted.
A character saved on the water may reload in the same location without a kayak.
Build Your Own Kayak adds a practical new way to explore Kentucky, combining detailed crafting, water transportation and useful survival activities. From fishing in remote lakes to crossing rivers with supplies, the addon expands gameplay beyond roads and walking routes.
