Fence Sheets adds the ability to cover fences and empty doorways with sheets and tarps in Project Zomboid Build 42. Block zombie line of sight, hide your base behind chain-link fences, and create movable fabric curtains for doorways. One tarp can cover up to three fence sections, while sheets can be opened, closed, and removed. Supports existing saves and multiplayer.

Fence Sheets is a practical survival and base customization mod for Project Zomboid Build 42 that allows players to hang sheets and tarps over transparent fences and empty doorways. Instead of leaving your settlement exposed to wandering zombies, you can cover open spaces with fabric to block visibility and improve privacy.
The modification expands the familiar window curtain system, allowing survivors to install removable covers on chain-link fences, metal bars, security grilles, and door frames without doors.
Closed sheets block line of sight in both directions. Zombies cannot see through them, but neither can your character.
Cover Fences with Sheets
The main feature of Fence Sheets is the ability to attach ordinary sheets to transparent fences.
Supported fence types include:
- Chain-link fences: Including damaged and burned sections.
- Metal bar fences: Tall metal fences and wrought iron barriers.
- Security fences: Wire security barriers and similar structures.
- Jail bars: Metal bars commonly found in prisons.
- Mall grilles: Transparent metal security barriers.
- Player-built fences: Tall metal bar fences constructed by survivors.
The mod automatically adjusts the appearance of the hanging fabric to match the height of the supported fence.
Low fences are not covered because characters can see over them. Solid fences are also excluded because they already block visibility.
How to Hang a Sheet on a Fence
Installing a sheet is simple and uses an ordinary Sheet item from your inventory.
Installation steps:
- Make sure your survivor has at least one Sheet.
- Approach a supported fence.
- Right-click the fence.
- Open the Fence submenu.
- Select Add Sheet.
The sheet will be attached to the fence, creating a removable visual barrier.
Available interactions:
- Click the sheet to open or close it.
- Remove the sheet to recover the original Sheet item.
- Climb the fence normally, even while a sheet is installed.
If the fence is destroyed, the attached sheet falls to the ground.
Cover Empty Doorways
Fence Sheets also allows players to hang fabric across door frames without doors.
This includes both existing doorways found in buildings and frames constructed by players.
Supported doorway types:
- Standard empty door frames.
- Player-built door frames.
- Large double door openings found in houses.
Double door frames have taller openings than ordinary doorways, so the mod provides appropriately sized fabric covers hanging from the upper frame.
How to cover a doorway:
- Approach an empty door frame.
- Make sure you have a Sheet.
- Right-click the opening.
- Open the Doorway submenu.
- Select Add Sheet.
Characters can still walk through a covered doorway.
If you construct a door inside a covered frame, the attached sheet is automatically dropped on the ground.
Doorways that already contain doors are not affected.
Tarps - Cover Multiple Fence Sections
For larger openings, Fence Sheets introduces an alternative to ordinary sheets: Tarps.
Instead of covering each fence tile individually, players can use a single tarp to cover a longer section.
Tarp features include:
- Up to three fence tiles: One Tarp can cover three adjacent fence sections.
- Full doorway coverage: A tarp can cover an entire doorway, including double door openings.
- Unified interaction: The entire tarp opens and closes as one piece.
- Reusable materials: Removing the cover returns the original Tarp.
- Size adaptation: Tarps are displayed according to the height of the fence or doorway.
To install one, right-click a supported structure and select Cover with Tarp.
This makes tarps particularly useful for covering long fences around a base.
Hide Your Base from Zombies
Fence Sheets provides a practical way to reduce visibility through transparent structures.
In vanilla Project Zomboid, zombies can see survivors through chain-link fences and other open barriers.
With this modification, players can install fabric covers that obstruct the view.
Potential uses include:
- Covering fences around a survivor base.
- Blocking visibility through prison bars or security grilles.
- Creating temporary curtains for unfinished doorways.
- Improving privacy around outdoor settlements.
- Covering transparent barriers without replacing the original structures.
However, sheets and tarps only block vision.
Zombies can still hear sounds produced by survivors, and covering a fence does not make it stronger or more resistant to attacks.
The modification is designed to expand defensive options without changing the physical strength of structures.
Fitted Sheets - Optional Window Improvement
Fence Sheets works alongside the separate Fitted Sheets modification.
While Fence Sheets covers fences and empty doorways, Fitted Sheets improves the appearance of curtains on tall windows and storefront glass.
In the original game, a sheet may only cover the upper portion of certain tall windows.
Fitted Sheets adjusts the fabric to match the entire glass opening.

Both modifications can be used together because they affect different structures.
Compatibility and Multiplayer
Fence Sheets is designed for Project Zomboid Build 42.
Compatibility information:
- Build 42.20: Supported.
- Build 42.21: Supported.
- Existing saves: Safe to add during an ongoing playthrough.
- Multiplayer: Supported, although extensive multiplayer testing has not been reported.
- Fitted Sheets: Compatible.
- Original game files: The mod does not modify vanilla files.
Removing the Mod Safely
Before uninstalling Fence Sheets, remove all installed fabric covers from fences and doorways.
This allows you to recover the materials and avoids leaving modded coverings in the saved world after the modification is disabled.
Fence Sheets is especially useful for players who enjoy building detailed settlements, improving their base defenses, and making transparent fences more practical during the zombie apocalypse.
