Improvised Silencers - Build 42 Update & Expansion brings an expanded suppressor system to Project Zomboid, allowing survivors to craft firearm attachments from everyday materials or use more advanced equipment.

This unofficial update builds upon the original Improvised Silencers, adapting its mechanics to Build 42.20 and newer.

Beyond compatibility improvements, the modification introduces new weapon sounds, optional suppressor durability, caliber-dependent wear and support for popular firearm expansions.

Five Craftable Suppressors

The addon includes five attachments with different effectiveness levels and weapon compatibility.

Suppressor Description
Professional Suppressor High-quality attachment offering strong noise reduction
Metal Pipe Suppressor Improvised alternative made from metal components
Hand Torch Suppressor Makeshift attachment crafted from a flashlight
Water Bottle Suppressor Basic suppressor assembled from common materials
Potato Suppressor Deliberately weak, single-use attachment made from a potato

Each standard model provides its own balance between sound reduction and weapon range.

The Potato Suppressor is a special novelty attachment designed for a single shot. It also includes a dedicated visual model and firing sound.

Professional suppressors can be crafted or discovered as loot.

New Suppressed Weapon Sounds

Gunshots now feature additional audio effects designed for different firearm categories.

The update introduces 11 suppressed firing sounds:

  • 4 pistol sounds.
  • 4 rifle sounds.
  • 2 shotgun sounds.
  • 1 dedicated potato suppressor sound.

These variations make suppressed gunfire sound different depending on the weapon family and attachment.

Extended Realism Mode

An optional Extended Realism Mode introduces additional mechanics for players who want more detailed firearm maintenance.

It is disabled by default, preserving the standard balance.

Customizable Noise Reduction

Sandbox settings allow players to adjust the sound reduction values of the four standard suppressors.

This gives players and server administrators greater control over how effective attachments should be.

Suppressor Durability

When enabled, suppressors gradually lose condition through use.

Their current condition can be viewed in weapon tooltips and the inventory interface.

Caliber-Based Wear

An additional setting makes ammunition type influence suppressor deterioration.

  • Smaller calibers cause less wear.
  • Rifle ammunition produces greater wear.
  • Shotgun ammunition also causes increased wear.

These mechanics are optional and controlled through sandbox settings.

Multiplayer is supported, with the server's sandbox configuration determining realism behavior for connected players.

Crafting and Installation

All crafting recipes have been migrated to the Build 42 craftRecipe system.

Weapon attachments and handling have also been updated for the newer game version.

Attaching Suppressors

A Screwdriver is required to install or remove the four standard suppressors.

The Potato Suppressor is an exception and can be attached by hand.

This distinction applies regardless of whether you are using the optional realism settings.

Guns of Marz Compatibility

The addon automatically supports compatible firearms from Guns of Marz.

Supported combinations:

  • All five suppressors on compatible rifles and handguns.
  • Professional and Metal Pipe suppressors on supported shotguns.
  • Direct attachment without Guns of Marz muzzle adapters.

No separate compatibility patch is required.

Guns of Marz is optional and does not need to be installed for the suppressor system to function.

Vanilla Firearms Expansion Compatibility

Automatic integration is also available for Vanilla Firearms Expansion Classic.

  • All five suppressors work with supported pistols, SMGs, rifles and carbines.
  • Professional and Metal Pipe models support compatible shotguns.
  • Weapons with integrated suppressors or specialized muzzle configurations are excluded.

These restrictions prevent unrealistic double suppressor combinations.

Both firearm expansions are optional and can be used together.

Build 42 Improvements

The updated version includes several technical changes:

  • Recipes migrated to the new crafting system.
  • Revised weapon-part and attachment definitions.
  • Updated suppressor statistics and firearm handling.
  • Additional suppressed firing sounds.
  • Revised loot distribution.
  • Support for newly introduced vanilla Build 42 firearms.
  • Updated translation files.
  • Optional durability and caliber-dependent deterioration.

The mod includes translations in English, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

Do not enable this version alongside the original Improvised Silencers Workshop release. Both modify related firearm attachment systems and are not intended to run together.

Although the addon is designed to work with existing saves, backing up important worlds before installing or updating modifications is recommended.

Improvised Silencers B42 expands firearm customization with practical makeshift attachments, improved compatibility and optional maintenance mechanics. Players can choose between straightforward noise reduction and a more demanding system where ammunition type and equipment condition matter.
