Vanilla Firearms Expansion (VFE) brings the classic weapon overhaul to Project Zomboid Build 42, expanding the original arsenal with approximately 40 firearms, additional ammunition types and extensive customization options.
This release is a port of the original Build 41 modification created by Vilespring, Stendo_Clip and Spuchel. It preserves their models, textures, sounds and gameplay design while adapting the project to the newer game version.
The main goal is to expand firearm variety without abandoning the recognizable visual style of Project Zomboid.
New Weapons and Equipment
The collection includes several firearm categories, each with its own visual and technical characteristics.
| Category | Included Weapons |
|---|---|
| Pistols | Various semi-automatic handguns |
| Revolvers | Additional revolver models |
| Submachine Guns | Compact automatic firearms |
| Rifles | Multiple rifle configurations |
| Shotguns | Different shotgun models |
| Machine Guns | Heavy automatic weapons |
Around 40 firearms are included, featuring custom models, textures, icons, sounds and animations.
For a complete individual weapon list, consult the original Vanilla Firearms Expansion page.
Weapon Attachments and Customization
Weapons support a variety of accessories designed to fit their respective models.
Available equipment includes:
- Optical sights and scopes.
- Bipods and slings.
- Recoil pads and choke tubes.
- Ammunition straps.
- Coupled magazines.
- Folding stocks.
- Bayonets and weapon-mounted flashlights.
Certain accessories also change the visible configuration of a firearm through alternate models.
Attachment compatibility depends on the individual weapon rather than being universal.
Additional Ammunition and Crafting
The expansion introduces calibers beyond those available in the base game.
New ammunition is accompanied by corresponding magazines, boxes and cartons.
The ammunition-packing system is integrated into the game's existing crafting recipes, keeping related actions together rather than creating an entirely separate crafting structure.
This makes ammunition management a more significant part of maintaining an expanded arsenal.
Balanced Weapon Spawning
Firearms are distributed through a rarity-based loot system.
Instead of appearing equally across every container, weapons are assigned to locations according to their availability and intended rarity.
Examples of loot locations:
- Houses and residential storage.
- Vehicles.
- Pawn shops.
- Gun stores.
- Police stations.
- Military facilities.
Common firearms can appear in ordinary locations, while rarer equipment is more concentrated in police and military areas.
Container density is adjusted by location type, making specialized stores more rewarding than random household drawers.
Sandbox Configuration
The mod provides settings for adjusting weapon availability.
Players can customize the overall spawn multiplier and the frequency of loot within individual location groups.
There is also an option to exclude vanilla firearms from VFE's own loot tables, allowing its additional weapon selection to take a more prominent role.
Administrator Configuration Panel
Server administrators receive a dedicated in-game interface for detailed balancing.
| Parameter | Customization |
|---|---|
| Damage | Adjust weapon damage |
| Fire Rate | Change firing speed |
| Jamming | Configure malfunction behavior |
| Reload Speed | Adjust reload timing |
| Range | Modify effective firing distance |
| Loot Density | Control weapon availability |
| Ammo Box Capacity | Adjust rounds per box |
Settings can be modified for individual firearms or entire weapon classes.
Most gameplay changes apply immediately and synchronize with connected clients.
Changes affecting loot distribution require a server restart before taking effect.
Multiplayer Support
The Build 42 port was developed and tested on a dedicated PvP server.
The implementation uses server-authoritative handling where necessary, providing a foundation for multiplayer weapon balancing and synchronization.
Administrators can adjust weapon behavior without requiring every player to configure the same values manually.
Additional Weapon Packs
Two optional expansions build upon the main mod:
- Vanilla Firearms Expansion - STALKER Pack - Additional content themed around the STALKER universe.
- Vanilla Firearms Expansion - Post '93 - A separate weapon expansion.
Both addons require the main Vanilla Firearms Expansion mod.
