Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix fixes visibility issues caused by giant trees in Project Zomboid Build 42.20. Hide obstructive trees indoors, make forest canopies transparent while driving or walking, and improve visibility of roads, zombies and furniture. Customize tree fading and view distance without affecting collisions, gameplay or saved games.
Contents
Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix is a visual improvement mod for Project Zomboid Build 42.20 that fixes visibility problems caused by oversized trees. The modification prevents giant tree canopies from covering furniture, windows, roads, and other important objects, making it easier to navigate buildings, drive through forests, and spot potential dangers.
Build 42.20 introduced larger trees, but their rendering can create unwanted outlines inside buildings and obstruct the player's view outdoors. Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix addresses these problems by temporarily hiding nearby trees indoors and making obstructive canopies translucent during movement.
Fixing Giant Trees Inside Buildings
One of the main features of Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix is its solution to the indoor tree rendering bug.
Large tree canopies can remain visible through walls and appear over interior objects, making furniture and windows difficult to see.
The mod automatically:
- Hides nearby jumbo trees when the player enters a building.
- Applies the fix to L, XL, and XXL tree sizes.
- Affects trees within a radius of 24 tiles.
- Restores normal tree rendering immediately after the player goes outside.
- Leaves normal-sized trees unchanged.
The affected trees are only hidden visually. They are not removed from the world.
Transparent Tree Canopies While Driving
Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix also improves visibility while driving through wooded areas.
Instead of completely removing trees, the default rendering mode gradually makes obstructive canopies transparent.
Driving improvements include:
- Transparent canopies: XL and XXL tree canopies covering the road ahead become translucent.
- Visible trunks: Tree trunks remain visible, helping drivers avoid collisions.
- Speed-based visibility: Higher vehicle speeds increase the distance at which obstructive canopies are affected.
- Selective rendering: Trees that do not block the road remain visible.
- Automatic restoration: Canopies return to normal after the vehicle passes or stops.
This makes it easier to notice zombies, wrecked vehicles, and other hazards that might otherwise be hidden behind dense foliage.
Better Visibility While Walking
The mod also improves visibility for survivors traveling through forests on foot.
While the character moves, nearby XL and XXL tree canopies become translucent in all directions.
On-foot features:
- Obstructive foliage fades while the character is moving.
- Canopies return to their normal appearance when the character stops.
- Trees closest to the player are restored first.
- Players can adjust the distance affected by the visual changes.
- Smaller L-size jumbo trees can optionally be included.
The L-size option is disabled by default and works only with the Fade rendering style.
Customizable Mod Options
Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix includes several settings that allow players to adjust how trees are rendered.
Available options:
- Hide view-blocking jumbo trees: Enables or disables the entire visibility system. Enabled by default.
- Canopy hiding style: Choose between
FadeandTrunk only. Fade is the default. - Hide road-covering canopies while driving: Controls transparency during vehicle travel. Enabled by default.
- Look-ahead distance while driving: Choose
LongorShort. Long is the default. - Hide canopies around you while on foot: Enables foliage transparency during walking. Enabled by default.
- On-foot hide range: Choose
Standard,Narrow, orMinimal. Standard is the default. - Include smaller jumbo trees while on foot: Adds L-size trees to the transparency system. Disabled by default.
The Fade style provides gradual transparency, while Trunk only removes obstructive canopies entirely.
Compatibility and Multiplayer Support
Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix supports Project Zomboid Build 42.20 and modifies only client-side rendering.
Important compatibility details:
- Existing saves: The mod can be safely added or removed at any time.
- Game mechanics: No changes to world state, collision, or character behavior.
- Multiplayer: Visual changes affect only the individual player's client.
- Local split screen: Trees hidden for one player also disappear on the other player's screen because both players share the same world rendering.
- Normal trees: Unaffected by the modification.
Trees retain their original collision behavior, even when their canopies are hidden or transparent.
Known Multiplayer Rendering Issue
Project Zomboid Build 42.20 has a separate multiplayer bug where world streaming may stop, causing unexplored areas to appear black or white in foggy conditions.
This issue occurs independently of Jumbo Tree Indoor Fix and is not resolved by removing the mod.
