SpiffBoy transforms Project Zomboid’s vanilla Handheld Game Console into a playable device with a 180 × 120-pixel screen and ten games, spanning puzzles, action, racing, adventure and more.

Find cartridges, insert them and play while your survivor takes a break from the apocalypse.

A handheld you can actually use

The console runs on batteries, so it remains usable without mains electricity. Play with a keyboard or controller, and connect headphones to keep the sound to yourself.

Playing can reduce boredom and improve mood. Loud audio can attract unwanted attention, so choose where and how you play.

Cartridges and Link Cables appear around Knox County in appropriate locations. Some consoles can already contain a game when found.

Saves belong to cartridges

Each cartridge stores its own progress. Lend one to another player, trade it or carry it with you: its save travels with the cartridge.

Challenge a friend

Connect two consoles with a SpiffBoy Link Cable to play together while staying nearby. The other player accepts the connection and joins from their own console.

Supports both online multiplayer and local split-screen.

Settings and additional games

Sandbox options control gameplay effects, including sound attraction and mood benefits. These effects can also be disabled.

Keyboard controls are configured under Key Bindings > SpiffBoy, while Mod Options adjust the on-screen presentation.

Other mods can add cartridges. The optional SpiffBoy SDK provides documentation, example games and development tools for creators.

Compatibility and saves

  • Supports Build 42.21 and 42.22.
  • Compatible with Project Viewpoint and pz3d.
  • Other mods must not replace or alter the vanilla Handheld Game Console.
  • Translated into every language supported by the game.

For multiplayer, add it to the server’s mod and Workshop lists. Players download it automatically when joining.

Safe to add or remove mid-save, but uninstalling loses cartridge save files.
