Gunworks Framework - Modular Weapon Systems for Project Zomboid

Gunworks Framework is a library for weapon mods that provides shared ammunition, attachment, animation and firing systems. It makes no gameplay changes on its own. Install it when another mod lists it as a dependency.

For developers, the framework treats weapons as modular platforms. A firearm can support several ammunition types, compatible magazines and interchangeable accessories, with rules controlling how those combinations behave.

Systems for weapon modders

  • Ammunition and magazines: support multiple ammunition types, optional stat changes for different loads, and several compatible magazines or speed-loaders per weapon family.
  • Weapon animations: cycling, racking and additional ammunition-count visuals.
  • Attachments: installed parts can alter weapon stats, while permanent components can be protected against removal.
  • Folding equipment: bipods, stocks and other two-state accessories can change their appearance and stats when deployed.
  • Compatibility rules: define accepted rail accessories, weapon-specific exclusions and upgrades that cannot be installed together.
  • Alternative attacks: attachable or built-in bayonets, underbarrel grenade launchers, shotguns and other secondary weapon modes.
  • Firing behavior: custom rates of fire, burst settings and optional spread adjustments.
  • Explosives: throwable devices and explosive ammunition with configurable trajectories and detonation behavior.
  • Loot distribution: functions for adding, removing and adjusting weapons, ammunition and parts in loot tables.

Universal attachment kits can install different components depending on the weapon. Additional helpers simplify setting and scaling weapon statistics across these systems.

Setup and documentation

Developers can find API documentation and examples inside the mod files. The author also highlights the separate Lua Animset Fix.

Features such as dual wielding, hip firing and firing while running are listed as planned additions, rather than current functionality.

Distribution restrictions
