Keep food chilled in portable coolers using ice or cold packs, without electricity. Find or freeze ice, manage melting and optionally enable Reworked Ice for water-based freezing and meltwater collection. Supports Build 42, existing saves and multiplayer.

Keep food fresh while traveling with ice-filled coolers. A cooler containing a Bag of Ice preserves food at half the effectiveness of a powered refrigerator, without needing electricity.

Beer, Meat, Soda and Seafood coolers are supported. While cooling is active, the container receives an (Iced) label and chilled items appear blue.

Finding and making ice

Find Bags of Ice in freezers, or make them by right-clicking water inside a powered fridge or freezer and choosing Freeze Into Ice. Chest freezers are supported.

Water marked for freezing in the same container combines toward production. A bag takes seven hours to freeze.

A full bag lasts approximately two days inside a cooler. Ice melts faster outside coolers and in hot weather. Under the standard system, melted bags can refreeze in a powered freezer.

The vanilla Cold Pack also provides cooling, but is weaker than ice.

Optional Reworked Ice beta

Reworked Ice is disabled by default. Enable it in sandbox settings to use the revised water-based system:

  • Tainted water creates tainted ice. It cools equally well but produces tainted meltwater. Adding tainted water to clean ice contaminates the bag.
  • New ice bags require an empty plastic or garbage bag, returned when the ice is used up.
  • Catch Meltwater: select this action on a bottle, pot or other water container inside the cooler. It collects melting water until full; uncollected water is lost.
  • Freezing consumes water gradually, filling one bag before starting another. Smaller quantities produce partly filled bags.
  • Melted bags need water marked for freezing beside them to refill.
  • Bag weight follows its water content and decreases as it melts.

Settings and compatibility

Eleven sandbox settings control cooling, ice lifetime, melting, freezing, cold packs, loot and visual indicators.

Cooling respects vanilla Food Rot Speed and Refrigeration Effectiveness settings and never exceeds a powered refrigerator.

For Build 42 only. Works with existing saves and multiplayer, including dedicated servers, without additional setup.

Other mods can register additional coolers and cooling sources.
