Build wooden and steel ladders, climb between floors and slide down fire poles with animated movement. Fatigue, weight and haste can cause slips. For Project Zomboid 42.21, with dedicated-server testing and support for first- and third-person camera mods.
SMB Steps adds usable ladders and fire poles with climbing animations, mid-climb direction changes and configurable physical risks.
Works with first- and third-person 3D camera mods.
Climbing controls
Press E or use the right-click menu to climb wooden and steel ladders.
- Turn around during a climb.
- Hold Run to climb faster or slide down.
- On a one-floor ladder, Run speeds up the entire movement.
- Use A/D or the menu to leave and rejoin at an accessible floor.
Exhaustion makes the character’s legs tremble and changes the top exit into a kneeling movement. Fatigue, carried weight and rushing can cause slips.
Fire poles
Grab a pole from the edge of a floor opening and spiral downward. Holding Run increases descent speed.
A character falling into the opening may catch the pole reflexively, but losing their grip results in a fall.
Construction
The build menu includes:
- Wooden ladders, using Carpentry.
- Steel ladders and fire poles, using Welding.
Placement guidance appears at the cursor. Install ladders against walls or beneath floor openings, and extend unfinished ladders from the top.
For fire poles, break an opening with a sledgehammer and weld the pole from above.
Sandbox settings
Climbing takes a toll controls endurance costs and physical consequences involving arms, ungloved hands and heavy landings.
Slips and falls offers three modes: Survivable, As in the game and Off.
Compatibility and removal
Requires Project Zomboid 42.21. Build 41 is unsupported.
Safe to add to an existing save. Multiplayer synchronizes climbing animations and rung positions, with testing performed on a dedicated server.
Do not combine with other ladder-climbing mods. Controller and split-screen support have not been tested.
Removing a middle ladder section leaves upper sections suspended and unusable for descending.
For removal from a multiplayer world, use SMB Steps Uninstall. Simply disabling the building mod can prevent the world from opening.
