A fatal encounter may end with a stranger rescuing you instead. Wake injured and hungry in an unfamiliar shelter, then piece together what happened through a journal. Optional Chapter II adds survival scenes, notes and events. Single-player only, Build 42.
Contents
Live to Fight Another Day gives your survivor a chance to escape death through an uncertain rescue. Instead of dying immediately, they may black out and wake roughly 30 hours later in an unfamiliar house far from the incident.
The windows are boarded, cupboards emptied and wounds wrapped in dirty rags. Your character is hungry and thirsty, and their held items are missing. A stranger’s journal explains the treatment, journey and whereabouts of lost belongings.
Rescuers with their own stories
Rescuers have generated names, occupations, personalities and relationships. The same person may return, changing their attitude after repeated rescues. They can demand payment, refuse further help or die.
Possible rescuers include nurses, thieves, soldiers, hunters, preppers and potentially hostile individuals.
Only a nurse can attempt to remove a bite, with a 50% success chance. Other rescuers bandage it without treating the infection.
Rescue is not guaranteed
Travel can involve breakdowns, blocked roads, attacks and injuries. You might wake beside a wreck or a dead rescuer, or fail to survive the journey.
Each rescue reduces the likelihood of another. Dying during the rescue cooldown is final.
An optional self-rescue system evaluates your ability to survive alone using skills, injuries, supplies and surroundings.
Chapter II: Out There
Chapter II is disabled by default. Enable it in sandbox settings to add notes, environmental stories, locations and events. The original rescue system works without it.
Discover checkpoints, abandoned convoys, evacuation sites, shelters, clinics and military, police, medical or civilian outposts. Sounds such as gunfire, alarms and crashes can lead you toward scenes.
Notes preserve survivors’ stories, point toward belongings or offer exchanges. You may also leave a message for your rescuer.
Configurable hazmat mechanics let a suit fool certain zombies. Related suit effects cause pain rather than body-part damage.
Experimental occupation and settings
Containment Soldier adds a seven-day sequence of military orders. This occupation is very early alpha, separate from the main rescue system’s development status.
Sandbox options control Chapter II features. Characters unable to stand after waking also have a right-click “I can’t get up” recovery option, with controller support.
Compatibility
For Project Zomboid Build 42, single-player only.
Home Sense is recommended, but consider compatibility when combining them. The mod includes placement safeguards for established bases.
Chapter II remains a work in progress. Report problems in the mod’s Bug Reports discussion; a persistent log is stored at Zomboid/Lua/LiveToFight.log.
