Floor Attack Highlight Fix - Improved Melee Targeting for Project Zomboid
Floor Attack Highlight Fix corrects misleading melee target outlines when attacking crawling or knocked-down zombies in Project Zomboid Build 42.
The vanilla game can highlight a grounded zombie even when the current attack would miss. This is especially dangerous during slow ground attacks, which leave the survivor temporarily unable to move.
The mod improves visual feedback without changing hit detection, damage or combat mechanics.
Main Features
- Accurate Target Highlights - Shows whether the current melee attack can hit a grounded zombie.
- Headshot Indicator - Highlights attacks aimed at the head, which deal critical damage.
- Bodyshot Indicator - Identifies torso hits dealing normal damage.
- Legshot Indicator - Marks attacks targeting the legs, which deal reduced damage.
- Miss Indicator - Shows when an attack is expected to miss.
- Customizable Colors - Adjust each highlight color independently.
- Optional Hidden Misses - Completely disable outlines for attacks that would miss.
Configuration
All settings are available in the client options menu.

A debugging overlay is also available through Character.Debug.Render.FloorAttackHighlightFix.
Important Combat Details
The highlight reflects the current attack conditions, but it cannot guarantee a successful hit.
- Distance and facing direction may change during the attack animation.
- Zombies can move their heads and bodies before the strike connects.
- Ground attack direction can change during the animation even when the character appears stationary.
- The melee cursor controls facing direction rather than directly selecting a specific body part.
Positioning and attack angle remain important.
Compatibility
- Game version: Project Zomboid Build 42 only.
- Build 41: Not supported.
- Singleplayer: Supported.
- Multiplayer: Supported when enabled by the server.
- Existing saves: Safe to install or remove at any time.
- Dependencies: None.
- Load order: No special requirements.
The mod uses Lua and runs entirely on the client. It does not modify save data or add server-side processing.
Performance testing with approximately 5,000 zombies on screen showed no noticeable FPS difference between enabled and disabled states.
Floor Attack Highlight Fix makes ground combat indicators more reliable while preserving the original Project Zomboid combat system.
