Cry of Fear Monsters brings creatures from Cry of Fear into Project Zomboid Build 42.20+, using their original models, animations and sounds alongside custom attacks.
Monster populations are independent of vanilla zombies. Play with both threats or disable ordinary zombies entirely.
Many creatures move quickly. Fitness and stealth matter when deciding whether to fight, escape or avoid detection.
Creatures with distinct threats
The regular population includes Slowers, Faster variants, Crawlers, Crouchers and other creatures. Spawn selection is weighted, with Slowers appearing most often.
Special threats include:
- Sawcrazy: charges with two chainsaws and cuts through doors and fences.
- Sawrunner: pursues you during scheduled nighttime encounters. Ordinary roaming spawns are optional.
- Stranger: damages your character when you look at him.
- Human Flower: immobile and invulnerable, killing characters who approach within three tiles.
- Flygare: a flying bed that attacks with ranged projectiles and can close in for melee.
- Drowned: looking at her forces your character to turn their gun on themselves. Repeatedly press left-click to resist.
Monster wounds do not transmit the Knox infection.
Population and encounter settings
Population levels range from None to High, with Normal as the default. These settings control how many monsters occupy an area, rather than encounter frequency.
Separate controls cover regular monsters, Sawcrazy, Sawrunner, Stranger and Drowned.
Other options include:
- Human Flowers: enabled by default.
- Night-only spawning: optional, covering 8 PM to 4 AM. Distant monsters disappear in daylight; nearby ones remain.
- Respawning: killed monsters return after 72 in-game hours by default. Set to 0 to disable.
- Sawrunner night encounters: enabled independently of his population setting.
- Ordinary Sawrunner spawns: disabled by default.
- Stranger gaze range: 20 tiles by default.
The author recommends Rare alongside normal zombies, or Normal/High without them.
