CD: Fancy Rats - Scout Companions and Optional Battle Rats for Project Zomboid

CD: Fancy Rats adds pet rats as a separate companion species for Companion Dogs. These small scouts detect trouble at long range and warn you quietly, offering an alternative to larger animal companions.

Requires Companion Dogs version 0.7.4 or newer. Vanilla rats remain unchanged and continue spawning independently.

Scouting and character bonuses

While your rat is healthy, fed and loyal, it increases your experience gains in Nimble, Lightfoot and Sneak.

Rats have a custom diet rather than inheriting the dog food rules. They can eat appropriate human foods, and chocolate is not treated as toxic to them, although it is not a healthy food.

The standard companion rat does not fight or help manage livestock.

Six appearances

Rats spawn randomly with these appearances:

• White.
• Grey.
• Hooded.
• Hairless.
• Brown.
• Russian Blue.

Look for strays in houses, farm buildings, warehouses, kitchens, storage rooms and basements.

Optional Battle Rats module

Choose between the classic companion module and Battle Rats in the mod selection screen.

The combat version allows rats to attack zombies, mainly helping by knocking them down. Rats panic quickly in combat, and even a fully trained rat remains less capable than larger fighting animals.

Other functionality stays the same. Switching modules in an existing save is expected to be safe, though newly spawned rats have slightly different stats depending on the selected module.

Compatibility and saves

Compatible with CD: Cats and other Companion Dogs species add-ons. Supports single-player, multiplayer and dedicated servers.

Safe to add to an existing save, although rats may not spawn in previously visited areas.

Not safe to remove mid-save.
