Vanilla Skills Expanded is a RimWorld mod that expands the vanilla skill system with specialized expertise and new passion types. Instead of relying entirely on broad skill categories, colonists can develop permanent specializations that reflect their abilities, experience, and personal backgrounds.

The mod introduces a new approach to character progression, allowing players to develop expert farmers, architects, professional chefs, skilled duelists, and other specialists. It also adds three passion types that expand the existing system of colonist interests.

Expertise System - Advanced Skill Specializations

The main feature of Vanilla Skills Expanded is the Expertise system, which allows colonists to specialize in particular areas of their existing skills.

Expertise provides additional depth to character development, making individual colonists more specialized in their chosen activities.

Important expertise mechanics:

  • One expertise per colonist: Each pawn can acquire only one specialization.
  • Skill requirements: Expertise can only be unlocked in skills above level 15.
  • Passion requirement: The selected skill must also have a passion.
  • Permanent specialization: Once an expertise is selected, it cannot be changed or removed.
  • Mod support: Other modifications can introduce additional expertise options for their own activities and mechanics.

Choosing the right specialization is an important decision because each colonist has only one opportunity to acquire expertise.

Three New Passion Types

Vanilla Skills Expanded also introduces three additional passion types, extending the standard RimWorld passion system.

New passion types:

  • Critical Passion
  • Natural Passion
  • Apathy

These additions provide more variety in how colonists relate to their skills and personal interests.

Together with the expertise system, they expand character customization and allow individual pawns to develop more distinctive skill profiles.

Character Development and Colony Specialization

Expertise is designed to make colonists stand out in specific professions rather than simply having high levels in broad skill categories.

Players can develop characters around their strengths and backgrounds, creating specialists suited to different colony activities.

Expertise is exclusive to player-controlled colonists. Non-player characters do not spawn with expertise, since the system is intended for the development and management of the player's own settlement.

Compatibility with Other RimWorld Mods

Vanilla Skills Expanded can be added to an existing RimWorld save without starting a new colony.
