Vanilla Quests Expanded - Cryptoforge is a RimWorld mod that introduces a new quest chain centered around a legendary crashed spaceship, ancient cryptotechnology, and powerful weapons. Players must travel to the frozen northern regions of the planet, investigate mysterious wreckage, and discover the location of the Cryptoforge, an ancient facility capable of producing extraordinary equipment.
The modification adds 4 new quests, challenging expeditions, dangerous mechanoid encounters, and a unique crafting opportunity that cannot be repeated through normal gameplay.
The Lost Spaceship and Four New Quests
The story revolves around an enormous spacecraft that once belonged to a civilization of space Vikings who mastered advanced cryptotechnology.
The ship crashed generations ago and broke into three separate sections. Finding the legendary Cryptoforge requires investigating the wreckage in a specific order.
The expedition consists of several stages:
- Abandoned scanning station: Locate the station and use its relays to discover the positions of the ship's bow and stern.
- Ancient wreckage: Travel to both crash sites, explore their twisted interiors, and overcome different dangers.
- Black box investigation: Scan two black boxes to determine the location of the remaining spacecraft section.
- The Cryptoforge: Reach the final crash site and discover the largely intact section containing the legendary forge.
The expedition takes place in extremely cold environments. Quest locations may appear far from the player's colony, making long-distance travel and preparation important.
Cryptoforge - Crafting Legendary Equipment
The Cryptoforge is located inside the final surviving section of the ancient spaceship.
Once players reach it, they gain access to a special crafting opportunity involving powerful cryptogear.
Unlike ordinary equipment, cryptogear has no hit points and never deteriorates.
However, there are important restrictions:
- Cryptogear can only be obtained through the Cryptoforge.
- The forge cannot normally be dismantled and transported back to the colony.
- Players have only one opportunity to use the facility.
- The amount of equipment produced depends on how quickly colonists can craft it while remaining at the crash site.
The Cryptoaxe and Cryptobolter also support visual customization, similar to weapons from Vanilla Persona Weapons Expanded.
Surviving the Mechanoid Assault
Reaching the Cryptoforge is only part of the challenge. Players must establish a temporary position and defend it against continuous waves of mechanoids.
The crashed spacecraft contains several useful defensive systems:
- A crypto-generator that can provide electricity and heating for a limited time.
- Defensive turrets scattered around the wreckage.
- Space for establishing temporary defenses and organizing equipment production.
Players should bring construction materials, necessary resources, and their most skilled crafters before entering the final location.
The longer the colony remains at the Cryptoforge, the more equipment it may produce, but surviving repeated mechanoid attacks becomes an essential part of the expedition.
A unique Legendary Hero may also provide assistance during the adventure.
Quest System and Developer Tools
Vanilla Quests Expanded - Cryptoforge uses a dedicated quest system that operates independently of the standard RimWorld storyteller.
Quest generation features:
- Four additional quests with their own activation conditions.
- Quests triggered by internal timers after their requirements are met.
- No reduction in the frequency of normal storyteller quests.
- The first quest is expected to appear within 30 in-game days of starting the game.
The developer menu includes a View Quest Chains option for inspecting quest progression, manually triggering quests, automatically completing objectives, and checking future activation times.
Special quest characters are unique. Once permanently lost, they cannot be obtained again through the normal system.
Compatibility and Important Limitations
Vanilla Quests Expanded - Cryptoforge supports existing RimWorld saves, allowing the quest chain to be added during an ongoing playthrough.
Important details:
- Existing saves: Supported.
- Combat Extended: Compatibility has not been confirmed.
- Cryptoforge relocation: Not possible through normal gameplay. Mods that allow uninstalling any structure may provide an exception.
- Cryptogear: Cannot currently be obtained through alternative methods.
- Quest locations: May generate anywhere on the world map, including remote northern regions.
