Proper Ragdolls — Zombie Deaths That Match the Hit

Proper Ragdolls replaces supported zombie falls with animations chosen for the killing blow. Hit location, attack direction, weapon, movement, and nearby obstacles determine how the body goes down.

It creates a ragdoll-like result through 272 fall animations and a small Lua script, rather than relying on physical corpse simulation.

Different hits, different reactions

Headshots, torso hits, shoulder wounds, and leg hits use different falls. Melee deaths also account for the swing, including sideways strikes, overhead blows, uppercuts, and knife attacks.

Direction matters: a zombie killed from the front does not collapse toward the attacker, while one killed from behind does not fall onto its back.

Other details include:

  • crumpling against nearby walls, fences, closed doors, furniture, or vehicles;
  • stumbling, rolling, or sliding when a running zombie is shot;
  • stronger reactions to heavy two-handed weapons;
  • shotgun knockback of approximately 1–2 metres;
  • ground-impact sounds timed to the body’s landing.

Bullet knockdowns that do not kill also use the new animations, after which the zombie gets up normally.

What remains unchanged

The mod leaves living zombies’ shoves and melee knockdowns alone. Vehicle impacts, fire deaths, falls from height, and reactions involving zombies already crawling or lying down retain vanilla behaviour.

In single-player, corpses keep their final animated pose and can be looted immediately.

Multiplayer

Install Proper Ragdolls on the server and every client. Fall selection uses shared information about the hit and surroundings so players see consistent reactions.

A game limitation affects the final pose: multiplayer corpses settle into a standard corpse pose after the animation, on the side where they landed.

Requirements and compatibility

  • Project Zomboid Build 42.21 or later
  • No Java component or additional framework required
  • Works with Physics Hit Reaction enabled or disabled
  • Can be added to an existing save

Other mods replacing zombie death or knockdown animations may conflict; the last-loaded replacement takes priority.

Restart the game after enabling or updating the mod, because animations load at startup.
