ZomVisFix — More Consistent Zombie Visibility

In Project Zomboid Build 42, the visible viewing cone does not always match which zombies the game actually displays. ZomVisFix reduces this mismatch, helping prevent enemies from seemingly appearing in an area you were already watching.

The mod checks sightlines and reveals qualifying zombies hidden by the vanilla visibility system. It never hides zombies that the game already shows.

Main features

  • Precise visibility checks: uses the player’s and zombie’s exact positions rather than relying solely on tile positions.
  • Stair-o-vision: reveals zombies at the top of the staircase you are climbing.
  • Adjustable transparency: zombies revealed through precise checks and stair detection have separate opacity settings, both set to 60% by default.
  • Optional aim-only mode: limits the mod’s visibility corrections to your combat stance.
  • Jumpscare integration: revealed zombies can influence the game’s jumpscare handling.

NPCs implemented internally as zombies, including those from mods such as Bandits, can receive the same visibility corrections. Animals are unaffected.

Settings and difficulty

Client options control individual features, transparency, processing frequency and maximum checking distance. The default processing rate is 8 checks per second per zombie; a distance limit of 0 uses the character’s viewing distance. An optional toggle key can also be assigned.

Two sandbox settings affect the experience:

  • Affect zombie vision, enabled by default, allows revealed zombies to detect you through the normal detection system. Their facing direction and other detection requirements still apply.
  • Hard mode, disabled by default, requires a zombie’s entire width to be unobstructed before the mod reveals it, making careful corner checking more important.

Compatibility and installation

Designed for Build 42, with single-player and multiplayer support. In multiplayer, the server must enable the mod, although its code runs entirely on clients.

No dependencies, ZombieBuddy or manual installation are required. Load order is unrestricted, and the mod can be added to or removed from existing saves without changing save data.

Compatibility includes True Line of Sight, Cone Vision Outline, Peek a View, Project Viewpoint and PZ_Optimization.

Very large crowds can increase processing costs. Aim-only mode, a shorter checking distance or a lower processing rate can reduce the workload.
