WinterFX — Snow with Depth for Project Zomboid
WinterFX gives snow a physical-looking surface in Project Viewpoint. It accumulates above the ground, compresses under footsteps, takes impressions from fallen bodies, and forms tracks beneath vehicle tyres.
The landscape changes with the weather: prolonged snowfall builds deeper cover, while warmth, sunlight, and rain gradually melt it.
This is an early release. Visual glitches, performance problems, and unreliable multiplayer behaviour are possible.
A changing winter landscape
Snow gathers beside walls and around open doorways, while coverage extends into the distance rather than stopping just beyond the player.
Parked vehicles slowly acquire a snowy layer. Players’ clothing and equipment also turn white during snowfall, then clear as the snow melts indoors or near warmth. Character accumulation applies to players, not zombies.
Cold conditions—around 7°C / 45°F or below—produce visible breath that drifts with the wind.
Deep snow can slow movement. This feature is enabled by default but can be disabled in sandbox settings.
Weather remains under the game’s control
WinterFX does not create snowstorms, alter temperatures, or change the forecast. It responds to the weather already present in your world.
Snow accumulation and melting therefore depend on suitable conditions rather than simply enabling the mod.
Shader support
Native Viewpoint shader packs provide the complete feature set.
Iris/Minecraft shader packs retain 3D ground snow, track shapes, distant ground coverage, and snow on vehicles and players, with limitations:
- tracks lack small surface bumps and churned detail;
- street lamps do not illuminate ground snow at night;
- roofs, distant trees, and buildings do not receive snow coverage.
Individual packs may display glitches or fail to load. Some performance cost is expected, particularly during heavy snowfall.
Settings
Sandbox options control accumulation speed, melting speed, maximum depth, and movement slowdown.
Under Options → Mods → WinterFX, each player can independently toggle snow accumulation on their character.
Requirements and multiplayer
Requires Project Zomboid Build 42, Viewpoint, and ZombieBuddy.
Multiplayer requires all three mods on the server as well. The server tracks snow depth and synchronises it with clients, while footprints and tyre tracks are rendered locally.
Multiplayer remains an early-build feature and may not function correctly on every setup. Other known problem areas include indoor snow, gaps, unusual edges, and shader compatibility.
