This Is Your Life — Give Your Survivor a Past in Project Zomboid

Before the first supply run or desperate escape, This Is Your Life asks you to decide who your survivor used to be. Character creation becomes a collection of everyday objects: hometown postcards, newspaper job advertisements, an assessment folder, and a Kentucky identification record.

The presentation changes substantially, while professions and traits retain their underlying Build 42 costs, bonuses, recipes, and restrictions.

The mod is still in development. Updates may cause save corruption or loss, so back up any saves you want to keep.

Create a person, not just a build

Choose your hometown by browsing postcards from eleven Kentucky communities. Then open the Knox Knews classifieds to find a profession and review its benefits before accepting the job.

Positive and negative traits are selected through a personnel assessment. Complete profession-and-trait combinations can be saved and loaded for future characters.

The final identification screen handles your survivor’s name, body, voice, hairstyle, clothing, and appearance. Each custom screen adapts to the game window and resolution.

A hometown with gameplay consequences

Your chosen town determines where you spawn. With Origin Traits enabled, it also grants local map knowledge, a visible origin trait, and 10% slower stress accumulation while you are in your hometown.

Each community provides an additional benefit:

Hometown Origin bonus
Riverside +10% Fishing XP
Muldraugh +10% Mechanics XP
West Point +10% Foraging XP
Rosewood 12.5% slower unhappiness accumulation
Dixie +10% Cooking XP
Ekron +10% Blacksmithing XP
Fallas Lake +10% Aiming XP
Irvington +10% Agriculture XP
Louisville +10% Sprinting XP
Brandenburg +10% Carpentry XP
Echo Creek +10% Reloading XP

Origin bonuses can be disabled without losing the custom character-creation interface.

Let your survivor react

The optional This Is Your Voice system adds contextual thoughts and spoken reactions. Personality, traits, profession, and experience help shape responses to combat, injuries, discoveries, everyday tasks, and changing survival conditions.

Repetition limits and cooldowns keep reactions from appearing constantly. Thoughts about routine needs are suppressed during immediate danger.

In multiplayer, these reactions are visible only to their own player. They are not sent to others and do not attract zombies. The module can be disabled through sandbox settings, while the configurable F9 binding toggles your own reactions during play.

Optional story beginnings

Scripted starts introduce a personal scenario at the beginning of a run. Players who prefer a conventional opening can disable them and use the selected town’s normal or curated spawn locations instead.

Requirements and compatibility

  • Designed for Project Zomboid Build 42.20 Stable.
  • Multiplayer support is experimental.
  • No framework or additional dependencies are required.
  • Traits registered through standard Build 42 systems appear in the assessment.
  • Mod-added professions are accessible through a supplemental classifieds window.
  • Mods that replace character creation or the spawning process are likely to conflict.
