Over the Shoulder
Your character can finally turn their head. This mod lets you look around and glance back over your shoulder. Running from a horde? Turn around and see who's right on your heels.
Controls
Mouse
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Press middle mouse button | your character takes a quick look back |
| Hold middle mouse button | the head follows the mouse for as long as you hold it |
| Press twice | the look locks in place; the next press releases it (enable in Options → Mods) |
You can rebind the key in Options → Key Bindings → Over the Shoulder.
Gamepad
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Press right stick | a quick look back |
| Press twice | the head follows the right stick; press again to face forward |
The button can be rebound in the controller settings.
Tip for immersion: bind the look to the same key as vanilla's "Pan Camera" (Options → Key Bindings).
Where it works
Standing, walking, running and sprinting, crouched, limping, sitting, lying down and aiming: with any weapon, and even with items in both hands.
It doesn't work during actions with a progress bar or while reloading.
Sandbox options
- tripping when you look back while running;
- neck pain from turning too much;
- helmets getting in the way of looking back;
- how far behind you the view reaches.
Sub-mods
All sub-mods come in this same subscription; enable only the ones you need.
Over the Shoulder The mod itself. Always required.
Over the Shoulder - Female Idle Stance patch For players using Female Idle Stance. Without it, a female character switches to the male stance and gait when looking back. It also fixes aiming straight out of a sprint and weapon switching in Female Idle Stance itself.
Over the Shoulder - Female Idle Stance Walk & Run patch For players using the Walk & Run add-on for Female Idle Stance. Use it only together with the patch above: without this sub-mod, that patch replaces the add-on's sprint with the plain one.
Over the Shoulder - Authentic Z fixes (unofficial) For players using Authentic Z - Current. Fixes a bug in Authentic Z itself where a weapon in hand turned the wrong way during turns. Works without Over the Shoulder too.
Over the Shoulder - Fancy Handwork fixes (unofficial) For players using Fancy Handwork. Fixes an error on 42.21 and a weapon flickering in the other hand when switching weapons. Works without Over the Shoulder too.
Over the Shoulder - limp fixes For anyone who wants serious leg injuries to stop them running. With it, you can't sprint with either leg injured (vanilla only checks the left one), and with bad injuries the character limps along at a walk instead of running. Works without Over the Shoulder, with any animation mods.
Compatibility and multiplayer
- Game version 42.20 and newer, tested on 42.21.
- Safe to add to an ongoing game.
- Multiplayer: according to reports in the comments, it works there too.
Tested with the mods listed in the credits, plus Even More Traits, SwapIt, Alice's Weapon Sling, Guns of Marz, Better Flashlights, Equip Items While Running and Authentic Z.
Possible issues with mods that change the width of the field of view (360° vision and the like), or that replace idle, walk and run animations.
Known issues
- The game can't turn the field of view backwards, so the mod widens it while you're looking back.
- At some facings, the view looks wider on one side, because the game draws it tile by tile.
- In split screen it only works for the first player.
