Horse Mod — Explore Project Zomboid on Horseback
Horse Mod introduces rideable horses to Project Zomboid. Find an animal, look after it, and equip it for journeys around the map. With saddlebags attached, your horse can carry supplies as well as its rider.
Horses appear at selected farms, ranches, and stables. There are seven breeds with multiple coat variations: American Quarter, American Paint, Appaloosa, Thoroughbred, Camarillo, Rocky Mountain Spotted, and Mustang.
From a walk to a gallop
Riding offers several movement options, including walking, trotting, and galloping. Small fences can be jumped while galloping, and riders can kick zombies approaching from either side.
Default controls are:
- Interact key — mount, dismount, or cancel the action.
- Movement keys — control movement.
X— toggle trotting.Left Shift— gallop.Space— jump a small fence while galloping or kick a zombie beside the horse, depending on the situation.
Key bindings can be changed in Mod Options.
Prepare your horse
Available equipment includes saddles, reins, and saddlebags. Carry the equipment in your inventory, then use the horse’s context menu and select Gear.
Saddlebags provide storage for items carried during your travels. Riding without a saddle is possible, but it causes groin pain for your character.
Enable the mod before launching
Horse Mod needs to be active when the game starts. Reloading mods during a running session can prevent horse animations from loading correctly. Every player in a multiplayer session needs to follow this requirement.
Launch with the mod enabled before creating a world, too. Otherwise, horse ranch zones may not be generated and horses will not spawn. Possible recovery steps for affected saves are covered in the FAQ.
Current issues to keep in mind
- Do not ride down stairs: a known bug can kill the player.
- If dismounting stops working, leave the save and load it again.
- Aiming while mounted may look incorrect.
- Horse equipment and manes can display oversized outlines when targeted with a weapon.
Several translations are available, including Russian. The project also provides documentation for modders interested in creating additional breeds or equipment.
